“They said that I masturbated before the show in the dressing room,” he recalled of a newsstand magazine headline that made light of his pre-show ritual on Monday’s episode of his “Club Random” podcast.
When actress Cheryl Hines questioned the headline, Maher, 69, candidly responded, “Because I did. Not often.”
The comedian continued, “Here’s the thing. This is the 90s. I mean, we taped every day, or three days a week. You know, it was an everyday show.”
“I was just like a wild person then, and I would be out at night,” adding that he would arrive on set “hung over.”
Walking back on his remarks, Maher claimed he wasn’t “hungover,” but sleep-deprived from staying out late “drinking and clubbing.”
“I could always get a nap if I jerked off first,” he said. “And I think one time I forgot to remove the Jergens [lotion] from the toilet area.”
The political commentator suspected someone saw the bottled lotion and reported it to the press.
“Politically Incorrect” was on the air for eight seasons from July 1993 to July 2002.
In 2003, Maher went on to kick-start his longstanding HBO series, “Real Time with Bill Maher,” though it’s unclear if he continues his pre-show routine.
The talk show host’s recent admission comes after he was photographed leaving Vas J. Morgan and Michael Braun’s annual Halloween bash with Noor Alfallah, 31.
Maher and Alfallah — who shares son, Roman, 2, with actor Al Pacino — appeared in good spirits as they hopped into a car outside of the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.
The duo’s recent sighting comes after Alfallah denied that she and Maher were dating following their appearance at the same hotel last October.
At the time, she stopped to tell TMZ paparazzi that she and Maher were “just friends” and labeled Pacino as her “best friend.”
