Bill Belichick becoming ‘the worst coach in college football history’
Bill Belichick’s beleaguered tenure at UNC certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Between off-field controversies and a subpar 2-3 product, the eight-time Super Bowl winner is well on his way to becoming “the worst coach in college football history,” according to ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, who tore into Belichick Tuesday during an appearance on “First Take.”

“We’re talking about Bill Belichick, who is the greatest NFL coach in history,” Finebaum began. “… He’s working toward being the worst coach in college football history. That’s how bad he is. There’s nothing to be happy about, it’s an abject disaster.”
Finebaum — whose “First Take” appearance came one day after allegations of a network ban following talk of his political aspirations — said he feels “badly” for Belichick, currently less than a year into his coaching career in Chapel Hill.
“It seemed like a good idea at the time, but right now, who in their right mind would want to play for the guy?” he added.
The Belichick-led Tar Heels have failed to live up to the heightened fanfare that has surrounded the team since UNC hired the ex-Patriots coach in December 2024.
UNC opened the season on Sept. 1 with a crushing 48-10 loss to TCU in front of a star-studded home crowd featuring Belichick’s 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.
The team saw its latest defeat Saturday, a 38-10 thrashing by Clemson that saw fans darting for the exits early.
The drama continued days later, when WRAL News reported a dysfunctional program under Belichick, not limited to a divided locker room and disorganized coaching.
Amid the program’s recent nosedive — both on the field and in the public eye — UNC has scrapped its season-long Hulu documentary that aimed to capture Belichick’s first year at the helm.
“[It’s] not an exaggeration to say he’s an absolute laughingstock in college football,” Finebaum continued during his weekly appearance on “The Michael Kay Show” on ESPN New York.
In one last dig, he declared that Belichick is “washed up” and hasn’t accomplished anything since his split from Tom Brady, with whom he won six Super Bowls across 20 seasons in New England.
Although there is a possibility UNC can turn things around, controversy after controversy has only continued to sink the ship.
UNC returns to action on Oct. 17 for a road matchup against California.
