Photo: Everett Collection It’s a Wonderful Life isn’t just my favorite Christmas movie, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time. Frank Capra’s classic was not well-received by audiences at the time, who found George Bailey’s story—a working-class man who always puts others before himself—depressing. It wasn’t until years later that it became a beloved holiday watch. Anchored by all-time performances from Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed, this movie taught me that everyone deserves dignity, no matter their financial situation, and that community is far more powerful than all the riches in the world. Be sure to watch the original black and white version for the best viewing experience.

Photo: Universal/Courtesy Everett Collection Director Ron Howard and star Jim Carrey were the perfect team for this adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss book, about a grump, Christmas-hating Grinch who decides to sabotage the Whoville celebration. That’s why it was a box office smash, and why millennials grew up watching this one every year. Now millennials can pass on this tradition to their kids!

Photo: Everett Collection Though not quite as revelatory as It’s a Wonderful Life, you can keep the ’40s Christmas movie party going with another classic, Miracle on 34th Street. Edmund Gwenn stars in the movie as a man legally named Kris Kringle, who works as a department store Santa, who insists to children that he is the real Santa Claus. A young Natalie Wood gives an unforgettable performance as little Susan, the true believer who will make you believe in Christmas magic, too.

Photo: 20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection The annual Christmas viewing of this holiday classic is going to hit especially hard this year, after the great Diane Keaton died last month at the age of 79. For Gen X and millennial viewers, it’s one of Keaton’s most beloved roles—the matriarch of a tight-knit family who hosts her four adult children (Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, Rachel McAdams, and Tyrone Giordan) and their partners for a chaotic, emotional, and memorable Christmas dinner.

The answer really just depends on whether you want to include this action movie classic as part of your holiday viewing. True, the movie hit theaters in July. And yes, star Bruce Willis himself has said it’s not a Christmas movie. But c’mon—the entire plot takes place during during Christmas Eve. That seems pretty darn Christmas-y to me. Plus, why not take the excuse to re-watch one of the greatest action flicks of all time?

Photo: ©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection There are a few movie versions of the classic Charles Dickens tale A Christmas Carol streaming on Prime right now, but the most entertaining is probably Bill Murray 1988 modern retelling, Scrooged. Murrary stars as the Scrooge-like Frank Cross, a greedy TV exec who is taught the true meaning of Christmas thanks to a visit from some colorful ghosts (David Johansen and Carol Kane). It’s no Ghostbusters, but it’s still pretty funny.

Photo: Everett Collection Sometimes you just want some dumb holiday fun, and you’ll get that with this Christmas-themed action comedy. Directed by Jake Kasdan (who is also the director behind the rebooted Jumanji movies), with a screenplay by Chris Morgan, Red One stars Dwayne Johnson as the head of security for Santa Claus (played by J.K. Simmons). Santa’s code name? The red one. It all makes sense! The Rock is ready to retire from this high-stress career, but first he has one more job: Prevent a nefarious hacker (played by Chris Evans) from ruining Christmas.

Photo: © Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc This animated Christmas-themed Batman flick for kids, directed by Regular Show creator Mike Roth, is sure to put a smile on the face of Batman fans young and old. There are plenty of bam-pow-kaboom fight sequences and fun visual gags—like the reveal that Batman’s intimidating silhouette is just a kind-eyed dad with a goofy beard, voiced by Luke Wilson. Kids will no doubt love that the story is centered on an awesome little boy, Damien Wayne (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) whose talents are underrated, but manages to prove to his dad that he’s plenty capable in the end.

Photo: Prime Video There’s a Tyler Perry movie for every occasion, and that includes Christmas. The latest drama written, directed, and produced by Perry is 2025’s Finding Joy, an Amazon original starring Shannon Thornton as a woman named—you guessed it—Joy. Joy is a fashion designer struggling to get her career off the ground, so she decides to follow her crush to a holiday getaway in Colorado. What could go wrong?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! (At least, that’s what Andy Williams promised.) The holidays are a time to celebrate with family, friends, food, and, let’s not forget, fun things to watch. Whether you’re huddled up with the whole family in your living room or cozying up under the covers with your tablet, let Decider be your guide to all things festive this holiday season.
