A beloved Iowa varsity football star, known for his kindness and fierce competitiveness, was accidentally shot dead when his friends mistook him for a squirrel on a hunting trip, officials said.
Carson Ryan, 17, a senior at Washington High School, was blasted in the back of the head by a member of his hunting party while on the prowl for squirrels Saturday afternoon in Brighton, roughly 12 miles from Des Moines, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The young athlete was rushed to UI Health Care Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Carson was a fierce competitor in everything he did,” Washington assistant football coach Nic Williams said at a vigil hosted by the slain teen’s high school Sunday, the Southeast Iowa Union reported.
“He loved fishing. He loved being with his friends. But more importantly, Carson was a person of incredible faith. He was loved by so many people; his mom, Heidi, his family and his friends and his teammates, his teachers and coaches and anyone who just got to spend a second with him.”
About a dozen nearby school districts also mourned the teen’s sudden death on social media and urged students and staff to wear Washington High’s black-and-orange team colors to honor Ryan, who competed on the district’s boys football, basketball and track-and-field squads.

“Washington Boy’s Track & Field team asks you keep Carson’s Mom, family, classmates and teammates in your hearts as we navigate the devastating loss of Carson,” the Washington Demons Boys Track & Field posted on Facebook Sunday.
The student victim also served on his school’s homecoming court, according to the district’s website.
His loved ones have since launched a GoFundMe that has raised more than $52,600.
“Carson was a son, friend, and bright light to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” the fundraiser said.
“His kindness, humor, and genuine spirit touched countless lives, and his loss leaves an immeasurable void.”
The fatal incident remains under investigation.
