Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller close to MLS deal with Whitecaps

Bayern Munich great Thomas Müller is closing in on a deal to make the jump to Major League Soccer with the Vancouver Whitecaps, according to multiple reports. 

Müller would be ending a decades-long run with the Bundesliga club as he eyes the move to the Whitecaps after flirting with a move to FC Cincinnati earlier this year. 

The Whitecaps and Müller only have the final details left to hammer out regarding the personal terms of the deal, which would include him signing a deal that would not make him a designated player in 2025, but then becoming one in 2026, GIVEMESPORT reported. 

The move would also be pending until Vancouver negotiated the “discovery rights” from Cincinnati, which had been negotiating with Müller previously. 

“Discovery rights” are a tool used in MLS in which a team can claim the right to negotiate with a player and The Athletic reported that the price for Müller’s “discovery rights” from Cincy could be roughly $400,000. 

Müller had said in a video posted over the weekend that his next adventure would come “across the pond.”

The 35-year-old is coming off a season in which he recorded eight goals and eight assists in 1,921 minutes on the pitch. 

Müller’s Bayern Munich career has included a number of accomplishments, including 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues over 16 years. 

During that span, he had scored 250 goals and recorded 223 assists. 

Internationally, he’s scored 10 goals across four World Cups for Germany and won the Golden Boot in 2010. 

The Whitecaps have been one of the best teams in MLS for most of the season, even with a dip from June to July. 

Müller would be an added boost for the club that sits in second in the Western Conference.
