Ayo Edebiri goes viral for response to cringeworthy interview with Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield

Ayo Edebiri’s reaction to being excluded from an awkward interview question directed toward Andrew Garfield and Julia Roberts has gone viral.

The trio sat down for an interview with Italian outlet ArtsLife Tv to talk about their film, “After the Hunt,” when film journalist Federica Polidoro asked a question about the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements — but only asked Garfield and Roberts to respond.

Polidoro specifically asked the two “what to expect in Hollywood after the #MeToo movement and the Black Lives Matter are done.”

Garfield immediately turned his body toward his co-stars and laughed uncomfortably. Roberts also appeared to be in disbelief, asking Polidoro, “Can you repeat that? With your sunglasses on, I can’t tell which of us you’re talking to.”

Polidoro doubled down, however, saying, “The question was for Julia and Andrew. Now that the #MeToo era and the Black Lives Matter [movements] are done, what do we have to expect in Hollywood? And what we lost, we lost something, with the politically correct era.”

Edebiri, who listened to the question with a visibly shocked expression, immediately answered.

“Yeah, I know that that’s not for me, and I don’t know if it’s purposeful it’s not for me, but I just am curious. I don’t think it’s done. I don’t think it’s done at all,” she said.

“I think maybe hashtags might not be used as much, but I do think that there’s work being done by activists, by people, every day, that’s beautiful, important work that’s not finished — that’s really, really, really active for a reason, ’cause this world is really charged. And that work isn’t finished at all.”

Garfield and Roberts showed their agreement as “The Bear” star, 29, continued to answer the question.

“Maybe there’s not mainstream coverage in the way that there might have been, daily headlines in the way that it might have been eight or so years ago, but I don’t think that it means that the work is done. That’s what I would say,” she said.

After Polidoro faced intense backlash online for excluding Edebiri, the journalist shared a lengthy statement on Instagram.

“I would like to clarify that, rather than focusing on the thoughtful responses of Ayo Edebiri, Julia Roberts, and Andrew Garfield, the discussion continues solely on how I should have phrased the question,” she wrote in part. “All the contributions from those present were reported in full in the published interview, without any omissions.”

She also argued that she was not racist, stating that her own family “is multi-ethnic, matriarchal, and feminist, with a significant history of immigration.”

The Italian journalist added that she reserves the right “to seek legal protection” against those attacking and insulting her online.

“After the Hunt,” directed by Luca Guadagnino, stars Roberts as a college professor caught between a sexual abuse accusation involving one of her students (Edebiri) and a colleague (Garfield).

The psychological thriller is set to be released on Oct. 10.
