Asante Samuel Sr. rips ‘little league’ Dolphins over Jalen Ramsey trade

Asante Samuel Sr. may have scuttled any chance of his son signing with the Dolphins.

The former Patriots star went scorched earth on the AFC East squad for having a lack of leadership in the aftermath of the recent trade that sent Jalen Ramsey to the Steelers.

“The Dolphins had no reason to trade Jalen Ramsey other than they’re sensitive, there’s no leadership in the Dolphins organization,” Samuel said recently on his “Say What Needs To Be Said” podcast. “[Head coach] Mike McDaniel is a pushover. Chris Grier, the general manager, he has no backbone. These guys over here, the Miami Dolphins, they are running this team like a little league team. No one can stand up to the players. They are terrified of their own players and they have no control over their players.”

The Dolphins had reportedly shown interest in Samuel’s free-agent son, Asante Jr., but it’s fair to wonder if these comments may have thrown a wrench into any potential plans for a partnership.

Samuel’s comments are quite harsh, especially since he went after the coach-general manager combo in McDaniel and Grier.

The pair recently made the franchise-altering decision to move from Ramsey after the star cornerback routinely showed up late to practice and meetings, and “undermined” former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio two seasons ago, as well as McDaniel this past season, according to the Sun Sentinel.

“He became a symbol of the Dolphins just collecting talent rather than building a team,” Dave Hyde wrote June 30. “Ramsey and Tyreek Hill were constantly late for practices or meetings in a manner that set the culture of last year’s Dolphins.”

Samuel, who played for the Patriots, Eagles and Falcons during his 11 NFL seasons, seems to be placing the blame for the situation more at the feet of the leaders than the players, putting the onus on the decision-makers to figure out how to make it work.

His remarks come at a time when there have been growing questions about the future of the Dolphins under the pair’s stewardship since the franchise appears stuck in no-man’s land.

The Dolphins made the playoffs in two of McDaniel’s three seasons and are 28-23 in his tenure, but they have zero playoff wins and went 8-9 last year.

The roster is aging and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has battled concussions that have threatened his future, while Hill seemingly has lost a step while creating controversies.

Miami also has lost several defensive stars this offseason, including Ramsey and safety Jevon Holland, who signed with the Giants.

Star offensive tackle Terron Armstead also opted to retire, leaving a huge gap on the left side.

How the Dolphins fare this season could influence the future of the club’s leadership duo and oddsmakers are not that high on the squad.
