“Probably a little behind,” Boone said on Thursday when asked if Volpe would have a normal spring training at the Yankees’ end-of-season press conference.

“The schedule would be for him to start hitting in four months… The last thing (is) he can’t dive on it or anything until six months. But we’ll also have a better idea at the 3-4 months if that timeline moves up a little bit, if it delays a little bit, but right now it’s four months till he’s hitting again. So, my expectation that he’s delayed to start the season or starting a rehab assignment when we’re starting the season but we’ll have a better idea on that … as it heals.”

Boone said that Volpe had an arthroscopic labral repair to his left shoulder after suffering the injury in May.

Volpe battled through the injury, though his play suffered both at the plate and in the field.

He ultimately sat out for a six-day stretch in September before returning to the lineup ahead of the postseason.

Volpe went 1-for-15 with 11 strikeouts in the Yankees’ four-game ALDS loss to the Blue Jays.
