Another futile Russia peace talk: Letters

The Issue: Recent peace talks between the United States and Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
This latest contorted attempt at peace in Ukraine belies a fundamental truth: Russia won’t accept a reasonable peace as long as it is gradually advancing on the battlefield, regardless of the cost of the advance (“Vlad’s ‘end’ vision,” Dec. 4).
The solution is to adequately equip Ukraine so it can turn 50 square miles lost per week into 50 gained per week. Once that shift happens, Russia will come to the table real quick.

I believe that our involvement in the unwinnable war with Russia needs to end. Let the European Union deal with this situation.
Neither money nor weapons will suffice. Ukraine needs fighters, and I, for one, do not want our young men and women’s boots on the ground. We need to deal with our own serious issues, of which there are many.

Vladimir Putin can’t be trusted to live up to the terms of any deal. He’s like an addict, hungry for territory to add to Russia and to establish his place in its history. If he “accepts” terms, it will just be his way of buying time and licking his wounds.

Putin illegally occupied eastern Ukraine by killing thousands of innocent men, women and children, and bombing schools, hospitals and civilian homes.
Trump should tell Putin that we will give Ukrainian forces Tomahawk missiles to rain down on Russia if he doesn’t come to a suitable deal for both warring countries.
Trump, don’t be like Joe Biden: Stand up to Putin. We the people want a fair and just peace for both sides, and we should not be intimidated by a vile, evil tyrant. Our country has the technology and the weapons to take on any foe.

The most important thing right now is to reduce Ukrainian and Russian casualties of both military and non-military personnel, who are being pummeled day and night by military weaponry.
What may look like kowtowing to Putin is unlikely to be the full picture. Whatever is decided behind closed doors will never be fully disclosed to the public.
This is a temporary stopgap — nothing more, nothing less. Our commitment to Ukraine has not changed.

The Issue: President Trump’s pardon of the former Honduran president, a convicted drug trafficker.
President Trump cracks down on the guys who were allegedly smuggling drugs across the Caribbean by blowing up their boats (“Ex-prez ‘not a narco,’ ” Dec. 3).
But then he pardons a high-level Honduran politician who took a $1 million bribe to overlook drug smugglers who prosecutors said “paved a cocaine superhighway to the United States.”
In America, our president seems to rule based on his personal say-so rather than the law.

The former president of Honduras, convicted in a court of law and sentenced to 45 years in prison for drug trafficking, was pardoned.
People accused of committing the same crime on a smaller scale with no evidence were murdered on the high seas.
President Joe Biden was old and slow, but he was still aware of what he did and said. Trump announced that he was pardoning someone, and the next day he acted like he didn’t know who it was — nuts.

Trump must have a split personality. His administration ordered attacks on Venezuelan boats suspected of carrying illegal drugs, yet he just pardoned a former Honduran president who convicted of drug trafficking — go figure.
