Angel Reese shuts down Robert Griffin III over Caitlin Clark ‘hate’ claim
Angel Reese said it’s “nasty work” to spread lies for clout after sports media personality Robert Griffin III claimed someone from the Chicago Sky star’s inner circle told him she “hates” Fever guard Caitlin Clark.
Reese, who didn’t name Griffin in a message posted to X on Thursday, made it pretty clear she was responding to the former NFL quarterback.

“Lying on this app when everybody know the first and last name of everybody in my circle for clout is nastyyyy work,” Reese wrote on the social media platform.
The drama began after Griffin posted a strongly worded response denouncing the spread of a racist tweet about Reese, who was revealed as the NBA 2K26 WNBA Edition cover star on Wednesday.
Griffin made some serious claims about Reese, saying that someone close to her called him and told him that the two-time WNBA All-Star hates on-court rival Clark — a narrative that has dominated headlines since the pair competed in college.
“Alright. This has got to stop. There is no place for racism in this world,” Griffin wrote Thursday in a message on X, which included an image of the vulgar tweet. “Whether you like a player or not. Angel Reese should never be called or depicted as a Monkey. I have been quiet on the Angel Reese front because she shared a video that aided in my wife, kids, family and friends receiving death threats, threats of physical harm to my family and friends and threats of sexual violence to my children on social media and beyond. That will never be okay with me.
“I never attacked her or her family when I stated and backed up with clear basketball evidence that Angel Reese hates Caitlin Clark. It’s sports. Everybody won’t like each other. People in Angel’s inner circle called me and told me I was right and Angel Reese has grown to hate Caitlin Clark because of the media always asking her about Caitlin and being constantly compared to her. Some people made it about race, but I never did and never will. Instead of becoming the villain in anyone’s story, I decided to just not.”
Reese’s mother, Angel Webb Reese, denied Griffin’s claim in a response on X and said the narrative that her daughter and Clark hate each other is a “media/fandom made up beef.”
“Man stop with the [lies],” Reese’s mom wrote Thursday in a reply tweet to Griffin. “My daughter’s ‘circle’ is so small & tight so I’d be interested 2 know who called U Whomever U say ‘called’ U is not in her circle 2 speak on her feelings towards a media/fandom made up beef. Just stay on that side bc the doors are closed over here.”
Clark, the No. 1 overall pick by the Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft, and Reese — drafted seventh to the Sky that same year — have maintained their relationship is a competitive one on the court and that nothing is personal.
Reese famously waved her hand in front of Clark’s face — the “you can’t see me” gesture — when her LSU Tigers took down Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2023 title game, which sparked the beginning of the rivalry.
Griffin faced backlash for reposting the racist tweet about Reese.
“All that being said, Angel Reese or any Black man or woman should never be called or depicted as a Monkey. Ever. Stop it. If you hate Angel Reese because she is Black, you are the problem. If you hate Angel Reese because you are a Caitlin Clark fan, don’t turn it racial. There should be no space for racism in this world,” he wrote.
The former first-round pick concluded his message by stating, “There is no place for racism in this world. There is a wrong side and a right side. I will stay on the right side of history and support all people.”
In another tweet, Griffin doubled down on his claim that someone from Reese’s camp called him and suggested she “tighten up” her inner circle.
“I spoke up in support of Angel Reese against racism not to start drama,” Griffin wrote. “But I won’t let anyone twist the truth just because it’s inconvenient to them. Instead of trying to check me, just tighten up your circle.
“They calling me and saying you hate Caitlin Clark, not the other way around. I have zero interest in being the villain in anyone’s story. I just want to have fun, tell the truth and celebrate sports. But I won’t pretend or lie just to protect feelings.”
Thursday’s saga comes roughly two months after Griffin and his former ESPN colleague, Ryan Clark, publicly feuded over Reese and Clark after the two got chippy during a Fever-Sky game. Clark was called for a flagrant foul on Reese at the time.
Griffin said that he believed Reese “hated” Clark, and Ryan Clark said Griffin was fueling a negative narrative about Reese and villainizing her, while also including race, Griffin’s wife and their home life in his rebuttal.
