“She was looking for a dermatologist that was not only good at treating acne, but understood the effects it has on one’s wellbeing and sense of self,” Mian tells Page Six Style, noting that there’s “no such thing as perfect skin, despite what you see on social media.”

While the pair agreed that many products on the market “seem fun to try,” Mian advises sticking to a set routine for an adequate amount of time to see if it’s a fit — and adding any active skincare ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid and retinoids gradually so as not to disrupt the skin barrier.

“Be patient,” she says. “It takes one skin cell at least 28 days to go through its lifecycle and that time increases as we age. Throw away your magnifying mirror, have faith in a good, bespoke skincare routine and be consistent.”

Though she advises building a strong relationshop with your own dermatologist and getting personalized recommendations, you can peruse some of the products she uses with her own superstar clients below — from buzzy K-beauty buys to drugstore standbys.

EltaMD Amino Acid Recovery Foaming Cleanser
EltaMD

“I love EltaMD’s Amino Acid Foaming Cleanser for those prone to acne and redness, as its amino acid complex is soothing and cleanses without irritation. Sun protection is crucial when it comes to protecting our skin as we expose it to active ingredients.”

Medicube Zero Pore Pad
Medicube

“Medicube Zero Pore Pads have the perfect balance of soothing ingredients with effective exfoliants. Using actives requires special attention to our skin barrier.”

Hero Cosmetics Original Mighty Patch
Hero Cosmetics

“Everyone gets those surprise zits once in a while, and Alix and I agree that the Hero Mighty Patches are our favorite. They are so thin yet effective with their medical-grade hydrocolloid and salicylic acid formula.”

Dieux Instant Angel Lipid-Rich Firming Moisturizer
Dieux

“I love Dieux’s Instant Angel moisturizing cream for its nourishing lipid profile and skin-strengthening peptides, and Avene’s Cicalfate+ for barrier recovery.”

Anua Rice 7 and Ceramide Hydrating Barrier Serum
Anua

“While active ingredients are necessary to clear breakouts, a nourished skin barrier using hydrating moisturizers is essential in maintaining the use of actives. I also recommend clients like Alix who struggle with acne consider adding a hydrating serum under their moisturizer, as an extra soothing layer. I love Anua’s Rice Ceramide Serum for this.”

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash
Neutrogena

“I think Neutrogena does a great job at face washes. Their oil-free acne cleanser is so good for chest and back acne from hot Pilates classes, and their gentle foaming face wash takes off makeup without leaving skin too dry.”
