Adams recalls dinner with Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion as he assails Dem primary winner’s ‘wealth’

Mayor Eric Adams recalled having Democratic primary winner Zohran Mamdani and his father over at Gracie Mansion more than a year ago as he assailed the lefty candidate Wednesday for coming from wealth.

Hizzoner, who is likely one of a few candidates to face the left-wing darling in the general election, tweaked Mamdani in a meeting with The Post’s editorial board as he ramps up his reelection bid.

“This guy is not some working-class, hard-working person. He comes from wealth,” Adams said Wednesday of the 33-year-old Democratic socialist.

Adams, 64, then recounted welcoming Mamdani and his father, academic Mahmood Mamdani, to the mayor’s residence for a meal before Mamdani announced his mayoral bid.

“He and his dad met me at Gracie Mansion about a year-and-a-half ago, and I had dinner with them,” Adams said.

“They come from wealth. And when you come from wealth, it’s easy to just throw out, ‘We should just be giving everything away.’ That’s just not reality,” Adams added about Mamdani’s list of freebies he wants to dole out if elected mayor.

A spokesperson for the Adams campaign later made clear the dinner took place before Mamdani declared he was running to take Adams’ job and is part of several informal gatherings the City Hall leader has with elected officials who represent the Big Apple.

“Mayor Adams routinely hosts new state and city elected officials and their families at Gracie Mansion as part of his effort to build relationships across all levels of government,” spokesperson Todd Shapiro said.

“It was during one of these informal gatherings that he met Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani and his father.”

Mahmood Mamdani is a Columbia University professor of anthropology, political science and African studies, while the candidate’s mother, Mira Nair is an Oscar-nominated filmmaker.

The family moved to the Upper West Side from Uganda while Mamdani was growing up, but paid little in rent because they were set up in Columbia housing.

Mamdani graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine and has worked for advocacy groups and nonprofits. He was also a music supervisor for a Hollywood film directed by his mother and had a short-lived stint as a rapper.

He became a state assemblyman in 2021 and has served two terms, though he doesn’t have much passed legislation to show.

Meanwhile, Hizzoner, who decided to forego the Democratic primary after he claimed his now-dismissed criminal case didn’t give him time to campaign properly for the June election, grew up in South Jamaica to a single mom who was a house cleaner, according to his biography.

He later joined the NYPD, rising to the rank of captain before he veered into politics.

Adams served as a state senator and Brooklyn borough president before the moderate Dem was elected mayor in 2021.

The incumbent has gone on the offensive in his quest to hold onto City Hall, criticizing Mamdani for a lack of experience as he’s boasted about his record leading the Big Apple.

Mamdani pulled off an upset performance over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo Tuesday night to all but secure the Democratic nomination for the mayor’s race.

Cuomo could still run in the general, along with Adams, Mamdani, Republican Curtis Sliwa and attorney Jim Walden.
