“They were like, ‘They might be looking for a different Sean.’ Shortly after we got the news, Donnie [Wahlberg] called me. It was a really beautiful moment of getting to hear from an old friend but also somebody that you respect so much and have learned so much from.”

“Blue Bloods” aired on CBS for 14 seasons from 2010 to 2024.

The procedural was set in New York City and followed the fictional Irish Catholic Reagan family, led by patriarch Frank (Tom Selleck), who have a history of working in law enforcement.

Frank was the New York City Police Commissioner and his son, Danny (Wahlberg), was also a cop for the NYPD.

“Boston Blue” (airing Fridays at 10 p.m. on CBS) follows Danny as he takes a position in the Boston Police Department.

Terraciano played Danny Reagan’s son, Sean, on the original show from 2010 until its 2024 finale. However, on “Boston Blue,” Mika Amonsen plays Sean.

Terraciano reflected that his experience in the role was “beautiful” because “you’ll always remember every single line and every day that you had the opportunity to be that character.”

He added, “It doesn’t mean for even a second that somebody else can’t go and do something beautiful with it. I got the joy of playing Sean, and I got to send him off into the world. Now somebody else gets that joy. We’re both getting to show what we do and then send Sean off into the world.”

Terraciano said that he “didn’t expect” so many fans to reach out to him after the recasting.

“It’s so meaningful to know that people love the character that I got to share in creating. I didn’t expect it to say the least.”

In October, “Boston Blue” co-showrunner Brandon Margolis told Variety about the reason they recast the role.

“We love Andrew and the work he did over the years on Blue Bloods. Really, it came down to we’re telling a new chapter in both of their lives,” he said.

He said that there are “new storytelling lanes to explore” and it felt like “an organic opportunity to bring in a new performance with a new energy, to help dramatize that change.”

In November, Amonsen addressed the backlash about the recasting.

“There’s been some negativity, for sure,” the actor told Us Weekly. “But when I look under those posts that have the negativity, there’s a lot of fans rallying for Sean and people saying that they really enjoyed this character that I’ve created — or my version of character.”

Amonsen said he felt “a ton of pressure” at first, and wanted to “respect Andrew the best I could.”

He added, “There were even certain visual choices that I made that I wanted to keep in terms of hair styling and certain ways of being [as Sean].”

The “Thanksgiving” actor explained that he wanted to “maintain Sean as close as I can in the ways that I do it out of respect for this character that everyone loves.”
