Is the ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ Movie Streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video?

Great news for Broadway fans: A filmed version of the Tony-winning musical revival of Merrily We Roll Along is coming to movie theaters tomorrow.

This production of the 1981 Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical ran on Broadway from September 2023 to July 2024, and featured an all-star cast in the three lead roles: Lindsay Mendez, Jonathan Groff, and Daniel Radcliffe. Groff starred as the charismatic composer Frank Shepard, who, in 1977, has become a rich and famous film producer. His former best friend and lyricist, Charley Kringas (Radcliffe) claims he’s a sell-out. And their mutual best friend, theater critic Mary Flynn (Mendez) is becoming more and more of an alcoholic.

How did it all go so wrong? The musical shows the audience, by progressing steadily back in time, showing us the trio’s friendship and lives over the years. Though this Sondheim musical was a critical and financial flop compared to the composer’s previous hits when it first opened in 1981, the revival broke records for the Hudson Theatre, where it was put on, and played to sold-out crowds.

It was such a success, that Sony Pictures Classics decided to release a filmed version of the stage show in movie theaters, in collaboration with specialty distributor Fathom Entertainment. The film will be shown in theaters in the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and additional countries and territories. It’s a rare opportunity to see Broadway on the big screen, but if you’d rather wait to watch it at home, we do expect to see Merrily We Roll Along streaming on Netflix eventually.

Merrily We Roll Along will only be available to watch in a movie theater, when it opens in the U.S. nationwide on Friday, December 5. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. Merrily We Roll Along is not yet available to watch online or on streaming, but we do expect to be able to watch the Merrily We Roll Along filmed production to stream on Netflix eventually.

Is the Merrily We Roll Along 2025 Broadway movie streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video?

Merrily We Roll Along is not currently streaming on Netflix or Amazon, because the movie is being released in theaters, only. Right now, the only way to watch Merrily We Roll Along is in a movie theater (sadly, the Broadway show closed back in July 2024). That said, because the filmed Merrily We Roll Along production is a Sony movie, being released in the U.S. via Sony Pictures Classics, so we do expect to see it streaming on Netflix eventually.

Netflix has a deal with Sony Pictures that gives the streamer the rights to the Sony movies in the “Pay 1” window, meaning the first streaming window after the film’s home media release. Another recent Sony Classic movie, On Swift Horses, came to Netflix about four months after opening in theaters.
