Big Apple shootings hit all-time low, subways safer, retail theft dips 20%, new NYPD crime stats show

It’s a rosier Apple — and it’ll be Zoh’s job to keep it from going rotten.
Shootings in the city are at an all-time low, murders are tied for the lowest ever and shoplifting is down big time, which should send a message of how things should be done to socialist Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, pols and pundits told The Post.

“Listen, it’s his to lose, it’s his to screw up,” political consultant and ex-cop Hank Sheinkopf told The Post Tuesday. “[Mayor Eric] Adams and [NYPD Commissioner Jessica] Tisch left him with a city with crime under control, and if he does the things he’s talking about, it could get out of control.”
Mamdani, who has railed against the NYPD and scoffed at the department’s staffing shortages, has asked Tisch to stay on — a step in the right direction, according to law enforcement advocates. But the honeymoon could turn sour if he doesn’t let the top cop do her thing, experts said.
“He cannot ignore the fact the department is understaffed,” said Maria Haberfelt, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “His claim to fame is that he doesn’t want to recruit. If he wants to keep some sort of trajectory, he needs to rethink his thinking.”
The newly released data shows that the city is now safer than it was even before the pandemic.
The numbers show that last month was the safest ever November for the city subway system — and tied for the fewest citywide murders for any month in the Big Apple since 2018.
“These historic gains are the result of our precision policing strategy and officers executing that strategy with the discipline and dedication that defines this noble work,” Tisch said in a statement released with the statistics on Tuesday.
“Our plan is working, the progress is real, and I’m grateful to Mayor [Eric] Adams for providing the tools that make these public safety gains possible,” Tisch added.
According to the department’s numbers, there were 652 shootings with 812 victims in the five boroughs through the first 11 months of the year, a new all-time low — less than the 696 shootings with 828 victims recorded over the same span in 2018.
The 16 murders last month — a 46.6% dip over November 2024 — tied the 2018 number for the lowest number of monthly homicides in the city, with no murders in Queens or Staten Island last month.
Meanwhile, police said subway crime, a long running source of concern for New Yorkers, continues to dip.
“This was the safest July, August, September, October and November in recorded history,” cops said.
There were 167 transit crimes reported last month, down from 222 over November of last year, a nearly 25% decline — for the safest November on the subways in recorded history, the department said.
With the Holiday Season upon us, police also touted a drop in retail thefts, with 4,221 incidents last month compared to 5,285 over the same period last year, for a 20% dip.
The NYPD said burglary, robbery, theft and grand larceny incidents also went down month-over-month.
The department credited a series of targeted-policing initiatives, including the Fall Violence Reduction Plan, which deployed as many as 1,800 uniformed cops deployed to foot patrols at 54 designated zones, including hotspots like housing projects and vulnerable subway stations.
The city has also launched quality of life and gang-busting units throughout the city.
“These strategies we put in place have made the city safer,” Adams said in a statement. “When we invest in the brave men and women of the NYPD and the strategies to ensure success, our city is safer and feels safer.”
The question is will Mamdani stay on track when he takes over.
“When crime is low, there is much wider latitude for a New York City mayor to focus on and enact other parts of their agenda,” Alyssa Cass, a partner with Slingshot Strategies, told The Post. “Low crime is a green light to advance the more ambitious parts of his agenda.”
One former Big Apple top cop agreed.
“My advice to Mamdani is leave the NYPD alone,” former NYPD Commissioner William Bratton said. “Focus instead on your rent control, mental health and free buses.
“The stats show that Jessie Tisch’s leadership over the past year is showing results,” he said. “It’s going to be a challenge for Mamdani to make sure this positive trend continues. We’ll have to wait and see.”
