In a recent interview in The Daily Telegraph, she said it’s “hard to know” whether she had experienced any backlash for her support of Allen.
“You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it’s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in,” she said.
The “Avengers” actress has starred in three of Allen’s films, including “Match Point,” “Scoop” and “Vicky Christina Barcelona.”
The “Annie Hall” filmmaker lost support from many in Hollywood, after his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, alleged that he sexually abused her when she was a child.
Allen denied the allegations, which were first made in 1992 and resurfaced amid the #MeToo movement.
Dylan’s brother, journalist Ronan Farrow, 37, penned a Hollywood Reporter column supporting his sister in 2016.
“I had worked hard to distance myself from my painfully public family history and wanted my work to stand on its own. So I had avoided commenting on my sister’s allegations for years,” Farrow wrote in 2016.
He added, “I believe my sister. This was always true as a brother who trusted her, and, even at 5 years old, was troubled by our father’s strange behavior around her: climbing into her bed in the middle of the night, forcing her to suck his thumb… more importantly, I’ve approached the case as an attorney and a reporter, and found her allegations to be credible.”
Allen is still working, most recently making the 2023 French film “Coup De Chance.”
In her recent interview with the Telegraph, Johansson added, “At the same time, I think it’s also important to know when it’s not your turn. I don’t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes it’s just not your time. And that’s something I’ve understood more as I’ve matured.”
In the same interview, Johansson also talked about issues such as suing Disney in 2021, over the company giving her movie “Black Widow” a release that was only on streaming.
“I mean, it would be great to have more support from the community and my peers — vocally, publicly — on certain issues that affect the entire industry,” she said.
She didn’t say whether she believes her support of Allen had an impact on whether the community supported her, but she added, “It’s always helpful to have more voices, you guys!”
