The bizarre joyride began when the real driver stepped off a Hamilton Street Railway bus for a quick break around 9 p.m. Tuesday, the Hamilton Police Service said in a statement to The Post.

Moments later, the bus, which was carrying roughly 10 passengers, lurched into motion — but the man behind the wheel was a completely different, unauthorized driver, authorities said.

Yet instead of causing chaos, the unidentified 36-year-old impromptu driver allegedly handled the bus with surprising skill and regularly stopped to pick up and drop off passengers along the route, cops added.

At one point, he even denied a rider attempting to board with an expired bus pass, officials claimed.

The mystery motorist, however, veered off course from the typical bus route a few times, requiring passengers to help him navigate, the New York Times reported.

“He took the bus off route,” Trevor McKenna, a spokesman for the Hamilton Police Service, told the outlet.

“He started going down side streets. At one point, one of the passengers had to supply directions.”

Police became aware of the situation and followed the bus, safely bringing it to a stop, after the imposter drove it for roughly four miles, cops said.

“We didn’t know if there was some ill will,” McKenna told the publication, explaining officers chose to calmly follow behind until the right moment to not escalate a potentially dangerous situation.

The man was subsequently arrested and charged with theft, obstruction, and other offenses, police said.

The police service has not publicly identified the man, who may have a mental health condition and appeared to have “no fixed address,” McKenna told the outlet.

“He was playing by the rules,” McKenna continued. “I guess you could say he was a good sport.”
