Mike Brown ‘disappointed’ by Knicks complaining about officials

The Knicks were angry at the refs, but coach Mike Brown was angry at his players for being angry at the refs.

He went out of his way to criticize his team’s incessant complaining during a 124-107 loss to the Magic on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

“The thing that I was most disappointed in was in the first half, everything that happened on the court, we blamed the officials,” Brown said. “And that was disappointing to see because we were the culprits of a lot of stuff that happened out on the floor. Six of their first eight points came from the free-throw line, and we fouled them. I couldn’t even use a challenge because we were fouling. One of our keys is to play physical without fouling, but if the first six points or the first three or four possessions that they have start at the free-throw line, then we’re not giving ourselves a chance, and we’re letting them feel comfortable with the way that they play.”

The Magic took 33 free throws while the Knicks took 23.

Brown’s comments represent a small departure from predecessor Tom Thibodeau, who often criticized the officiating after games and hardly, if ever, called out his own team.

Knicks opponents average 15.2 made 3s against them per game.

Entering Thursday, that was second most in the NBA.

The Magic certainly took note and made it a point to expose that deficiency.

“They give up [some of] the most 3s in the NBA,” Anthony Black said after Wednesday’s game. “They got one of the lowest percentages and give up [some of] the least amount of looks at the rim. We know they pack the paint a lot. Part of the game plan was just being ready to shoot and being able and willing to make the right play. It was part of the game plan, and I think we did a good job of executing, stepping into our shots with confidence.”

The Heat will be without Bam Adebyao (left big toe sprain) for Friday’s game at MSG.

He recorded 19 points and 13 rebounds when the Heat beat the Knicks 115-107 in Miami in the third game of the season.

And the Heat still are without Tyler Herro, who underwent left foot surgery before the season.
