Hall has been on a roll. He had 83 rushing yards and a 42-yard receiving touchdown against the Browns a week after rushing for 133 yards and two touchdowns against the Bengals.
The decision not to trade Hall looks like a wise one.
“He’s a three-down back, and there’s not a run scheme that he can’t be a part of,” Glenn said. “There’s some running backs that they’re better in a wide zone, mid zone, they’re better in gap-scheme runs. Man, he can do all of that, and not just that, now you can line him out as a receiver and allow him to go to work and he can just catch it out of the backfield and do some things. He has all those capabilities to make an explosive play any time you get the ball within his hands.”
The Patriots will present a stiff test for Hall and the Jets rushing attack. They are allowing a league-best 79.2 yards rushing per game.
The Patriots signed defensive tackle Milton Williams to a four-year, $104 million contract in March and he has teamed up with Christian Barmore and Khyiris Tonga on the defensive line to stop opposing rushers.
Tampa Bay’s Sean Tucker became the first player to rush for more than 50 yards against the Patriots this season in their game last week.
Four downs
Maye day: The most shocking element of the Patriots’ success this year has been just how quickly quarterback Drake Maye has improved.
Maye had a shaky rookie season but has jumped into the MVP discussion this year under Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
Maye has completed 71.7 percent of his passes and has 19 touchdown passes against five interceptions.
The Jets will be facing him without cornerback Azareye’h Thomas, who stepped into the starting lineup last week after Sauce Gardner was traded.
Thomas has a concussion.
“I think everybody knows he’s a really good athlete, but he’s really a good athlete, and to be that big,” Glenn said. “And then, just going into his second year in the league, to be able to process the information that he’s processing right now, I mean, it’s pretty unique to see that from such a young guy, and to have all the talk of MVP candidate right now and the way he’s going about doing his business, he’s doing a good job.”
No passing zone: The Jets passing game has been horrible for most of the season. That has led to teams loading up to stop the run, which the Patriots surely will do.
At some point, the Jets are going to have to make teams pay by throwing it over their heads. Jets coach Aaron Glenn said immediately this week he would not answer quarterback questions, but Justin Fields is expected to remain the starter.
It would not be surprising to see Tyrod Taylor in the second half if Fields struggles early.
Either quarterback will be without star receiver Garrett Wilson, who has a knee injury.
It will be interesting to see if the Jets can get Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie, both acquired at the trade deadline, involved this week.
Something special: While the Jets have had ups and downs on offense and defense this year, their special teams have been consistently good.
They starred last week against the Browns with two returns for touchdowns — a 99-yard kickoff return by Kene Nwangwu and a 74-yard punt return by Isaiah Williams.
The Jets have also gotten solid performances from Nick Folk, who has not missed a kick this season, and Austin McNamara, who has a net average of 44.1 yards per punt, the seventh-best average in the league.
Tre time: Patriots rookie TreVeyon Henderson had a breakout game against Tampa Bay last week, rushing for 147 yards and touchdowns of 55 and 69 yards.
The Jets have had trouble against the run this year, ranking 25th in the NFL in rushing defense. On top of that, the Jets may be without defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, who has a foot injury and is questionable to play.
The Jets are already adjusting to life without Quinnen Williams and losing Phillips would be a tough blow. There is also the question of what the Jets will do at linebacker after benching Quincy Williams last week, then reinserting him into the lineup in the second quarter.
Costello’s call
There are some games where everyone thinks something is going to happen … and they are right. This feels like one of those games.
The Patriots are rolling. The Jets are banged up and not as talented. It’s a short week. It’s in Foxborough.
It feels like the old days. Patriots roll.
Patriots 30, Jets 14
