Bernie Kosar hospitalized with liver issues after transplant canceled
Browns great Bernie Kosar revealed Wednesday morning that he underwent two “aggressive procedures” to stop internal bleeding, and was headed for a third.
The former quarterback recorded the update from his bed at University Hospitals in Cleveland, telling fans that he was slated to receive a liver transplant over the weekend, but the procedure was put on hold because the donor organ was infected.

The Cleveland sports legend then said he had two surgeries to address the internal bleeding.
In the video, Kosar, 61, asked fans for “your love, support and actual prayers today” and ended the message by saying, “God bless you, you matter.”
Kosar said in the video that the bleeding had begun after the Browns fell to the Jets on Sunday.
The Browns expressed well-wishes to Kosar in a social media post on Wednesday afternoon.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Bernie. We love you and are with you every step of the way. If anyone can stay strong through this, it’s you,” the Browns wrote.
The Browns great told Cleveland Magazine in July 2024 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and cirrhosis of the liver.
He has been on the wait list to receive a new liver since 2024.
Kosar was the No. 1 overall pick by the Browns in the 1985 NFL Draft and went on to lead Cleveland to four playoff appearances from 1985-89.
The Browns made the AFC Championship Game three times (1986, ’87 and ’89) and his three playoff wins are the second most for any Browns quarterback in franchise history.
Kosar is third in all-time passing yards in Browns history with 21,904.
He spent 12 years in the NFL, playing for the Browns, Cowboys and Dolphins.
Kosar won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys in 1993.
