Americans’ affordability crisis: Letters

The Issue: President Trump dismissing claims that Americans face significant affordability issues.

President Trump is as delusional as his predecessors (“Affordability is an issue, and voters want action,” Editorial, Nov. 7).

Leaders in this country have no idea what it is like for the average person.

Down here on the ground, I watch as my income is eroded by the increasing cost of living with no end insight.

The Biden years were awful and now President Trump is just making it worse.

It’s time we start electing people who’ve been faced with the pressures of living in the real world, not the ones who’ve never had to.

I voted for Trump and want to take my vote back.

In December 2024 I was paying around $5 for a can of coffee (1 lb, 9.9 oz).

The same container of coffee is now over $20.

Trump brags that the economy is doing great.

Unfortunately, it is at the expense of the consumer.

I’m on Social Security, and if this keeps up, I will be helping Trump brag about the rise in the job market because I’ll be looking for one myself.

Every day I read another article saying Trump hasn’t done enough to bring prices down.

Apparently, this was a major reason Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor.

Was anyone paying attention during the prior administration?

Overall prices started escalating early on in the Biden administration and continued to spiral upwards for four years.

How can anyone realistically think this disaster could be fixed in less than a year?

It is always easier to blame Trump than those who started the problem.

Both sides of the political aisle need to put their partisanship aside and fix this albatross.

I suggest Trump allot $100 to personally shop for basic necessities in a local supermarket.

That might fill one bag.

It will quell any illusions or doubts he has about the cost of living in America today.

Nowhere in your editorial did you mention that Trump is fighting ferociously with the Federal Reserve to dramatically lower interest rates.

Cutting them three full points would free up $935 off my monthly mortgage payments on the “cost of money” alone.

Imagine what millions of Americans like myself could do with that extra income.

This is easily the biggest nonpartisan economic story in the country.

The Post should dedicate resources to following its progress.

The Issue: Jamaal Bowman’s push to become Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s schools chancellor.

Religious and private schools need to understand the threat to education posed by socialism, Marxism and anti-semitism (“Zoh school fools seeking top job,” Nov. 9).

These alternatives to public schools should quickly expand to accommodate families unable to flee the city.

Teachers alarmed by the support for antisemitic candidates should reconsider their future and re-kindle their understanding of Germany circa 1933. It’s urgent that media repeatedly broadcast all the videos of candidates, such as Jamaal Bowman, publically cursing our democracy, Israel and anyone unlike them.

It appears not one of the chancellor candidates is even remotely qualified to head the country’s largest public-school system.

Parents want their children to learn the basics and get ahead on merit, not be brainwashed with antisemitic lessons.

But Bowman should be put in charge of all fire drills, as he is an expert.
