Lara Trump praises John Fetterman for standing up to Dems, Sunny Hostin

Lara Trump compared Sen. John Fetterman to her father-in-law, President Trump, on Tuesday after praising the Pennsylvania Democrat for voting with Republicans to end the government shutdown and ably defending himself from criticism leveled by “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin.

Fetterman broke ranks with Democratic leadership and voted with Republican senators 15 times to reopen the government before the upper chamber finally pushed through a legislative package Monday that would fund the government through Jan. 30, 2026, if approved by the House.

“It’s so refreshing, Martha, to see that there is someone like John Fetterman out there, a politician who does the right thing, regardless of the pressure he feels from his own party or a TV host like Sonny Hostin,” Lara Trump said during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Story with Martha MacCallum.”

“They are getting aggressive with him as well,” the president’s daughter-in-law continued.

“He reminds me of someone else I know, his name is Donald J. Trump.”

Fetterman appeared on ABC’s “The View” earlier in the day and was criticized by Hostin over his efforts to end the record-long lapse in federal funding.

Hostin likened his and other Democratic lawmakers’ dealings with the GOP to bringing “a butter knife to a gunfight,” and referenced criticisms from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) “blamed the GOP” for the shutdown.

“MTG is quite literally the last person in America that I’m going to take advice or to get their kinds of my leadership and values from,” Fetterman shot back. “Now, if Democrats are celebrating crazy pants like that, then that’s on them.

“Now, I don’t need a lecture from, whether it’s Bernie or the governor in California, because they are representing very deep-blue kinds of populations and a lot of those things were part of the extreme.”

Fetterman then doubled down.

“I refuse to weaponize the SNAP benefit for 42 million Americans that rely on feeding themselves and their family, or making flying in America, you know, less safe, or I refuse not to pay our military and all of the unions attached to all of this, and people. So for me it’s like I don’t agree with that tactic to respond to circumstances that we’re confronting on this.”

Lara, married to first son Eric Trump, explained that Fetterman’s “authenticity” and willingness to “stand up and fight for the right things” are what “people love.”

“When I sat down with him for an interview for my show, he talked about the fact that he doesn’t ever agree, no matter who’s at fault, with shutting down the government,” she continued, noting “the havoc” that the shutdown “wreaked across our country.”

The former Republican National Committee co-chair and current Fox News host argued that Democrats “would rather make a political play” make the country “hurt” than “do something that is right.”

“And I think it’s really nice that you have John Fetterman out there who at one time, Martha, we all looked at and said, he’s kind of fringe, he’s kind of far left – he’s now the most common sense in the Democrat Party and how refreshing it is that he’s continuing to be that way,” Lara added.
