David Stearns can’t rely on trade deadline alone to fix Mets quagmire



David Stearns refuses to believe the past week and a half defines the 2025 Mets. He also will not ignore it. 

The Mets president of baseball operations engaged reporters for 20 minutes in a news conference, mainly about all that has derailed the Mets in a 1-9 stretch they took into Tuesday night’s game against the Braves. And in a one-on-one moment afterward, he conceded the 10 days has changed the picture of what he thinks his team needs to add before the July 31 trade deadline.

He said he would not share what he sees as the priority, but did add, “It will probably change again in the next 10 days.” 

What most clearly has to change is just how much has gone wrong simultaneously for this club. Because there is not going to be an external fix for a rotation that has U-turned the wrong way, an overstressed pen and a lineup that after the cleanup spot has performed like something the 1962 Mets dragged in.
