Crafted in 1952 by Gilbert Adrian, Grande’s sparkly one-shoulder black gown is true Old Hollywood couture.
Adrian was the costume designer of 1939’s original “The Wizard of Oz,” making the archival piece a fitting tribute to the story that began it all.
The late designer was under contract with MGM from 1928 to 1941, during which he worked on 200 films, including “The Wizard of Oz.” This era saw the rise of Hollywood stars such as Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford and Katharine Hepburn, in addition to “Oz’s” original Dorothy, Judy Garland.
Grande shared the look on Instagram, writing, “♡ Gilbert Adrian 1952 ♡ hello London, i love you 🫧”
The decades-old gown features an asymmetric design that feels extremely ahead of its time. With a structured bodice, the right side of the gown boasts a puff sleeve and cascading skirt. The right side remains strapless, flowing into a puffy, tiered ballgown-like skirt below.
In fact, the princess nature of the silhouette is in stark contrast to the deep black hue, perhaps unifying the dissonant characters of Glinda and Elphaba with a bit of fashion history.
This isn’t the first time Grande has reached into Adrian’s archives. Working with stylist Law Roach, the performer slipped into a sleek black 1940s embellished gown from the designer just a few weeks ago.
From last year’s “Wicked” (and this year’s “Wicked: For Good”) to Netflix’s “Wednesday” and beyond, method dressing has been quite popular for those who take on uniquely stylish characters.
This latest “Wicked” tour, however, feels more high-fashion and expertly couture than others, from custom looks to subtle archival nods to the greats that came before.
And the results are magical.
