Chappell Roan pulled out all the stops Saturday night to induct Cyndi Lauper into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in an elaborate ensemble inspired by Lauper’s 1986 “True Colors” music video.

The “Good Luck, Babe” singer, 27, paired a show-stopping skirt constructed from shredded newspaper clippings with a massive chandelier headpiece — both near-replicas of pieces her musical idol wore four decades ago.

Genesis Webb styled the custom look in collaboration with designers Efrain Nava, who created the skirt, and Manny Robertson, who made the towering headpiece.

The Grammy winner revealed she first performed “True Colors” at age 14 in her Missouri hometown — it was the first competition she won as a singer. YouTube
Lauper, 72, responded to Roan’s tribute during her own acceptance speech, saying her “shoulders are broad enough to have the women who come after me stand on mine.” YouTube

Webb sourced several pieces of the ensemble from eBay, including the vintage crystal halter top, gold peep-toe sandal, and layers of pearl and crystal jewelry.

“Cyndi embodies every quality of an artist that I admire,” Roan said in her induction speech. “She’s a born performer and a revolutionary songwriter, a forever fashion icon, and a fierce advocate and ally.”

“From the very beginning, she owned every ounce of who she was: the Manic Panic-ed hair, all of those rad fingerless gloves, and those unbelievably layered, dynamic and one-of-a-kind vocals,” she continued.

Roan’s makeup, by Dee Carrion, was also an homage to Lauper’s bold ’80s color palette, with streaks of canary yellow and fuchsia accenting her shimmering eyeshadow.

Jacob Aaron styled her signature auburn curls while nail artist Rachel Sun created newsprint press-ons to accessorize the look.

Roan’s connection to Lauper’s hit song runs deep. “I sang True Colors in a talent show when I was 14 and I ended up winning first place for the first time!! It was the first moment I thought maybe singing could be a thing for me,” the “Pink Pony Club” hitmaker wrote on Instagram.

Lauper, “has played an instrumental role in my artistry, fashion, glam, voice, movement, all of it,” Roan continued. “I shed several tears.”

Lauper returned the love during her own acceptance speech. “I know that I stand on the shoulders of the women in the industry that came before me,” she said, “and my shoulders are broad enough to have the women who come after me stand on mine.”

In a behind-the-scenes clip showing the creation of the look, Nava expressed how much designing the skirt meant to him: “I know my mom is crying somewhere in the distance in joy,” he wrote on Instagram. “Cyndi meant so much to her growing up, and to be here now honoring her. We share this joy and excitement so many years later together.”
