UPS plane that exploded was grounded for fuel tank repairs
The UPS cargo plane that crashed in Louisville Tuesday was 34 years old and was very recently grounded for more than a month for critical repairs to its fuel tank, according to a report.
The MD-11 plane was stranded in San Antonio for repairs from Sept. 3 to Oct. 18 as it received a permanent repair to fix a crack in the fuel tank before getting back in the sky, according to FAA maintenance records reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

At least 12 people — including a child — were killed after the plane lost its engine, nose-dived and crashed in a fiery blaze seconds after taking off from Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, officials said.
The crash sparked a massive inferno that consumed the enormous aircraft and spread to nearby businesses, harrowing footage shows.
The jet, which had three UPS employees on board, was carrying about 50,000 gallons of fuel at the time.
