Pennywise is a drain-dwelling, shape-shifting, “celebrity” clown that has made his mark in horror history one red balloon at a time—and clearly continues to. The 1986 Stephen King novel IT has been adapted into multiple movies and miniseries spanning from the ’90s to the 2000s, and has now inspired its very own prequel TV show.

​The HBO Original horror drama, It: Welcome to Derry, premiered in October and has close ties to the 2017 film that jump-started the creepy clown craze surrounding Pennywise all over again. For starters, the director of the new series is Andy Muschietti, who also directed It (2017) and IT: Chapter Two (2019). Another familiar (painted) face is Bill Skarsgård, who iconically plays Pennywise in both the aforementioned movies and the new TV show. The difference? The latest TV adaptation opens in 1962, which sets us back in Maine 27 years before the plot that unfolds in the 2017 film. Yes, Pennywise has been racking up missing kids for a long time.
