Doomed UPS plane’s engine detached from aircraft moments after attempted takeoff at Louisville airport
The engine of a UPS jet that exploded in a ball of fire at a Louisville airport fell off of the aircraft shortly after liftoff, with the plane rolling over and crashing moments later, officials said.
“We have viewed airport CCTV security coverage, which shows the left engine detaching from the wing during the takeoff roll,” National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Member Todd Inman said at a Wednesday news conference.

The footage reviewed by the NTSB has not been released, but clips circulating have shown the UPS Flight 2976’s left engine engulfed in flames as it rolled up the tarmac at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport just after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Moments later it collapsed into the ground and burst into flames, killing all three crew members on board and at least six others.
The plane’s black box has also been recovered, the NTSB said.
