Gates’ global warming pivot: Letters

The Issue: Bill Gates suggesting we should prioritize improving human life over reducing carbon emissions.

Focusing on reducing human suffering rather than greenhouse emissions, as Bill Gates suggests, is not a denial of climate change. It’s an acknowledgement that helping sick children is more emotionally fulfilling than agonizing over statistics (“Gates turns up the heat,” Bjorn Lomberg, Nov. 1).

Lomberg’s unhelpful analysis frames these two approaches as mutually exclusive, but we can and must respond to both the immediate and long-term dimensions of the climate crisis. We must rebuild communities while also working to rein in the out-of-control climate systems which caused the damage in the first place.

Lomberg’s response is merely a comforting rationale for inaction.

It’s particularly disturbing that Gates is a very smart man and his epiphany did not come as a result of any new studies. So, in his long advocacy of climate-change disaster, he must have had ulterior motives.

There are many more like Gates who likely benefit in various ways by promoting the climate change hoax as long as possible.

Roger Pielke misses a key point: The somewhat less disastrous outcomes that updated models forecast are dependent on a continued transition away from fossil fuels (“ ‘Changing’ consensus,” Oct. 30).

It’s as if he’s saying, “My blood pressure medication is working great, so I don’t need to worry about my blood pressure anymore.” But being on track isn’t a reason to stop your medication.

Give credit to Gates for admitting his mistake. Sadly, Al Gore still remains silent about his “Inconvenient Truth,” as he continues to fly around in his private jet.

Both Gates and Gore failed to acknowledge humankind’s ability to overcome obstacles and find solutions for them, before predicting disasters that aren’t happening.

Gates said climate change is real but that it won’t lead to the end of humanity. The problem is that he’s just surmising.

Gates’ remarks downplay serious concerns. We are already experiencing intensified weather events such as unprecedented hurricanes, heat domes, droughts and floods.

How will climate activists handle this earth shattering news? No more protests or Earth Day marches?

Just like that, the doomsday narrative of global warming has gone by the wayside.

The Issue: Federal charges against 19 dealers involved in a Washington Square Park drug market.

It’s about time something is done about the drug dealers in Washington Square Park (“ ‘Perfect’ Square,” Nov. 1).

I’m glad the federal government is stepping in.

The NYPD does a great job, but with soft-on-crime District Attorney Alvin Bragg, drug dealers are back out on the street in no time. He says he’s committed to safety but does nothing.

Once again, the cleanup in Washington Square Park shows the NYPD’s diligence.

It’s unfortunate that, largely due to the Manhattan DA’s lackadaisical enforcement practices, these arrests must be prosecuted in federal court.

If this disgrace has been happening in the park for a long time, then why haven’t those who are cleaning it up now done something about it before, perhaps saving some lives? Doing a good deed when it is too late is not a good deed at all.
