“I adore tales about big, mysterious houses in which nothing is quite as it seems — not horror stories so much as intrigue, atmosphere, secrets and surprises,” she tells Page Six.

Lockhart’s new book, “We Fell Apart” — which is on sale now — takes inspiration from classic books like Iris Murdoch’s “The Good Apprentice” and Shirley Jackson’s “We Have Always Lived in the Castle.”

Book cover for "We Fell Apart" by E. Lockhart, featuring a silhouetted person against a blurry, light-filled background.

“‘We Fell Apart’ is beachy, though,” Lockhart explains. “Think tall cliffs over raging waves, a derelict brutalist mansion, a mysterious disappearance and a boy who might be a selkie.”

See below for Lockhart’s favorite recent gothic reads.

Book cover for "The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle" by Stuart Turton.

“The body-swapping, Groundhog-Day, video-game gothic you didn’t know you needed. You’re in Blackheath Castle and you know there will be a murder today — unless you can prevent it. But you keep switching bodies and the day keeps rebooting and what is even happening? I can’t believe Turton pulled this off.”

Cover of "The Decagon House Murders" by Yukito Ayatsuji, featuring a pink hand over a blueprint of a decagonal house on a blue background.

“A puzzle-box of a murder mystery set in a strange architectural marvel on an isolated island, written in a minimalist style. Less about psychology and more about characters in relation to each other like pawns on a chess board.”

Book cover for "Mexican Gothic" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, featuring a woman in a red dress with a bouquet of marigolds.

“Atmosphere so thick you could cut it like a piece of cake. Closer to horror than the rest on my list, it’s about a glamorous debutante who comes to rescue her mysteriously ill cousin in a decaying mansion in the Mexican countryside.”

Illustration of the book cover for "The Inheritance Games" by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, with a dark green background and golden title text featuring elements like chess pieces, candles, a ballerina, a key, and a dagger.

“This is the rollicking party version of the gothic house trope. A preternaturally intelligent girl inherits a mansion full of secret passages and puzzles, but in order to get it, she has to spend a year living with the family she’s displacing. Lots of flirtation, a gazillion brain teasers, and loads of action.”

Book cover for "The Family Plot" by Megan Collins, featuring a miniature house in a glass cloche.

“Macabre and darkly funny, it’s about a family obsessed with serial killers and who reunites in the family home for the funeral of their patriarch — only to find they’ve got a ton of unprocessed issues. I love the crime scene dioramas and the homeschool lessons on the gory crime scenes of unsolved murders.”

Book cover for "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield, featuring a stack of old books with a red ribbon bookmark.

“The sensual, sticky, icky version of the gothic house trope, this book is one I still think about years after reading it. The bizarre Angelfield family, their weird house, a pair of feral twins, and a mind-bending ending.”

Let’s be honest—no matter how stressful the day gets, a good viral video can instantly lift your mood. Whether it’s a funny pet doing something silly, a heartwarming moment between strangers, or a wild dance challenge, viral videos are what keep the internet fun and alive.
