Kayvon Thibodeaux rips Giants’ defense: ‘S–t is unacceptable’

The Giants defense has been an embarrassment for nearly a month now.

They entered Sunday’s game against the 49ers having allowed 71 points in the previous five quarters and then lost 34-24 to San Francisco.

That’s 105 points allowed in the past nine quarters — a stunning number.

“That s–t is bad, man,” Giants defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux said. “That s- -t is real bad. Everybody has to do a better job. That s- -t is unacceptable.”

Thibodeaux was speaking about a defense that has allowed 33, 38 and 34 points in the past three games.

“The defense has got to be better,” Thibodeaux said. “The front seven has got to be better. The secondary has got to be better. We got to be stout. You’ve got to stop the run game to even have a chance to rush the passer.”

Said Giants head coach Brian Daboll: “Look, nothing was good enough. We’ve got to keep working on our tackling. We eliminated some explosive plays, which was good, but 4-of-5 in the red zone is tough — and three of those [TDs] were on third down.”

Daboll lamented a Giants linebacker getting picked on a Christian McCaffrey TD reception in the first quarter on which the star 49ers running back looked like no one was covering him.

“They had a nice play designed against what we were playing, and the linebacker got picked,” Daboll said. “Credit a good play design.”

One player who said he thought he played well was DT Dexter Lawrence, who last week was publicly called out by former Giants LB Carl Banks. Yet Lawrence was credited for only one tackle in the game, for a loss.

“We’ve got to make the plays that come to us,” Lawrence said when asked what went wrong with the defense. “We didn’t make the plays that came to us. I don’t think there’s any lack of effort. Everybody played hard. We just didn’t make the plays.’’

The TD reception by TE Theo Johnson to give the Giants a 7-0 lead in the first quarter was his fifth of the season.

And for rookie QB Jaxson Dart, it was the fourth time in his six NFL starts that he’s led the team to a TD on its first offensive possession.

Giants edge rusher Brian Burns entered the game tied for the league lead with Cleveland’s Myles Garrett with 10 sacks and he got his 11th late in the first half, which was also a strip-sack. He also had a key pass bat down. DL Rakeem Nunez-Roches had the other Giants sack in the game.

Sunday was the Giants’ first game without dynamic rookie RB Cam Skattebo, who was lost for the season with an ankle injury last week.

In his place, RBs Devin Singletary had 43 rushing yards on eight carries and Tyrone Tracy Jr. had 18 yards on five carries.

In the game, the Giants lost starting C John Michael Schmitz to a shin injury, LB Darius Muasau was knocked out with an ankle injury, WR Beaux Collins went out with a neck injury and WR Darius Slayton was checked for a concussion.

Entering the game, the Giants were without three of their four starters in the secondary — CBs Paulson Adebo (knee) and Cor’Dale Flott (concussion) and S Jevon Holland (knee). That forced them to use Deonte Banks and Korie Black at CB and Dane Belton at S.

Starting RT Jermaine Eluemunor (pectoral muscle) was out and replaced by rookie Marcus Mbow. TE Daniel Bellinger (neck) and DL Chauncey Golston (neck) were also out.

WR Ray-Ray McCloud III and LB Zaire Barnes were signed to the active roster from the practice squad and were active for the game. CB Rico Payton was added to the active roster from IR while corner Art Green was placed on the reserve/injured list.

Before the game, Schmitz walked into the stadium wearing a Skattebo shirt. … Some three-and-a-half hours before kickoff, 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh ran the steps inside MetLife Stadium, a ritual he always did before every Jets home game when he was their head coach for three-plus seasons.
