Father-to-be wakes up from coma to blame beau for car crash — before dying

A young Florida father-to-be who was left in a coma following a violent car crash regained consciousness long enough to rat out his girlfriend for deliberately causing the crash, authorities said.

New York native Daniel Waterman implicated Leigha Mumby as he claimed his girlfriend sneered, “I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve,” while the pair were driving along Interstate 95 in Florida’s Flagler County during an argument the night of the Super Bowl last February, court papers show.

With Mumby, 24, allegedly behind the wheel and Waterman, 22, in the passenger’s seat, the car barreled into a tree, leading the beau to suffer severe injuries that left him in a coma, the victim’s mother told syracuse.com.

But the Syracuse-area native recovered enough to speak with investigators via a white board in May, which led to the claims that his girlfriend caused the crash, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by People.

He told authorities that the two started fighting after Mumby found out she was pregnant and after he received a text message from a woman in New York, the complaint states.

His mother, Heather Waterman, said he was merely texting a friend who was a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles while her son was a fan of Kansas City Chiefs. The two teams squared off in the Super Bowl.

Mumby eventually started driving recklessly and slammed the car right into the tree, the court docs alleged.

Mumby, who was also badly injured but survived, claimed she didn’t know what led to the crash. Her unborn child also survived and Mumby has since given birth.

Waterman made enough of an improvement that he was transferred from Florida to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse to continue his recovery in July but died of pneumonia on Oct. 8, Syracuse.com reported.

“He never gave up,” Heather Waterman told the outlet. “This whole entire time, he literally never gave up.”

Mumby was initially charged with reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in July before she was hit with vehicular homicide as a result of Waterman’s death, People reported, citing cops.

Waterman’s kin is now focused on fighting for custody of his apparent child. Heather Waterman vowed to wage a legal battle to prove Waterman is in fact the father and bring the child to New York.

“We’ll do whatever we can do to bring her to us,” she told syracuse.com. “He wanted her raised in New York with his family.”
