The 29-year-old strutted down the Paramount Studios runway in the original “Black Diamond” look designed by Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin for the Baz Luhrmann-directed film.
The showstopping ensemble featured a black and silver corseted bodysuit and high-low skirt covered in Swarovski crystals, sequins, and bugle beads in a fish-scale pattern.
The look was styled with fishnet tights, embellished Mary Jane heels, a crystal-adorned top hat by Rosie Boylan, and diamond drop earrings.
The full-circle moment came after Kidman herself opened the show moments earlier, performing “Put the Blame on Mame” in a custom black Chanel satin bustier gown by the French fashion house’s new artistic director, Matthieu Blazy.
Luhrmann — a longtime favorite of Anna Wintour, Conde Nast’s global chief creative officer and Vogue’s global editorial director — provided creative direction for the event.
Martin and co-designer Angus Strathie won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for “Moulin Rouge!”
The Black Diamond look debuted in the scene where Kidman’s Satine descends into the Paris nightclub on a trapeze while singing “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.”
The bodysuit itself is an extraordinary piece of craftsmanship, heavily jeweled with beaded fringe, a diamante-edged velvet neckline and crystal-studded straps. Martin posted behind-the-scenes video of the recreation process on Instagram.
The original costume is currently on display at Swarovski’s “Masters of Light — Hollywood” exhibition in Los Angeles through November 3.
Vogue World: Hollywood celebrated “the rich conversation between film and fashion,” with 100% of ticket proceeds benefiting costume professionals affected by the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires through the Entertainment Community Fund.
