Diane Lane Reveals She “Still Has” A “Bomber Wrap Jacket” From Shooting ‘The Outsiders’: “I Was Thinking of Giving It to the Smithsonian”
It’s been over four decades since The Outsiders hit theaters, and Diane Lane is revealing what she held onto after shooting the hit film.
During Lane’s visit to Live with Kelly and Mark, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos asked the actress about her time filming Francis Ford Coppola‘s 1983 film adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s novel, in which she starred as Sherri “Cherry” Valance.

“Ralph Macchio told us on the show that Coppola separated the Socs and the Greasers,” Ripa said.
Consuelos added, “And you were like the Soc of all Socs.”
Lane confirmed, noting that she “was the only female,” meaning she “was really siloed off.” Ripa asked Lane if they put her “in a whole different hotel,” which she denied, though she did acknowledge one perk she was treated to while filming.
“But I was allowed to have a rental car, which never happens,” she shared. “I mean, I was 17. You can’t get a rental car until you’re 25. You’re not even allowed. I don’t know how they pulled that off. It was 1982. It was a long time ago.”
After Lane teased that this form of special treatment was “enough” for her, Consuelos asked if she “kept” anything from set.

“I still have the bomber wrap jacket,” she revealed. “It says ‘My Cherry,’ and ‘Lane,’ and The Outsiders on the back. I was thinking of giving it to the Smithsonian. I think they passed on it though. Good for me.”
Consuelos agreed, “I’m sure it’s worth a lot.”
Lane joked that if worse comes to worst, she could sell the jacket online for her “retirement plan.”
“If needed, I got a plan C,” she quipped.
Ripa said, “I think it’s very valuable, by the way.”
