Wilson played one season under Payton in 2023 and the pair very famously did not see eye-to-eye much.

After the dramatic 33-32 comeback win over the Giants, Payton touched on the Giants’ quarterback situation. He complimented rookie Jaxson Dart while getting in a dig at Wilson, who was the starter for the first three games of this Giants season.

“They found a little spark with that quarterback,” Payton said, referring to Dart.

“I was talking to [Giants owner] John Mara not too long ago and I said we were hoping that that change would have happened long after our game.”

The implication being that Payton had been hoping that when Week 7 arrived this year, the Broncos would have the chance to see Wilson under center.

The Giants had named Dart the starting QB going into Week 4 after starting the season 0-3 with Wilson at quarterback.

Wilson had struggled during his lone season with the Broncos in 2023, and Payton benched him with two games left in the regular season in favor of Jarrett Stidham.

Wilson threw for over 3,000 yards, along with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions, with the team 7-8 when they sat him.

He was then cut in the offseason, with the Broncos taking on $85 million in dead salary cap to end the partnership.

Since taking over for Wilson in New York, Dart has invigorated the Giants franchise and given hope for the future.

The rookie threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns and led the Giants to a go-ahead touchdown drive with 37 seconds left after they had blown a 26-8 lead.

However, his lone interception for the day ended up being a costly one in the midst of the Broncos’ comeback win.
