The Skims mogul, 44, confessed to the dust-up when host Alex Cooper asked what item in her closet would cause a similar meltdown to her infamous diamond earring incident, when the pricey accessory fell off in the ocean during a 2011 “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” episode.
The drama began when the reality star became “obsessed” with a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier-designed Birkin shoulder bag — only a handful were ever made. (Gaultier was the creative director of Hermès from 2003 to 2010.)
Kardashian told Cooper she was torn about whether to tell her momager about the holy grail item.
“I want to collect every one, but they’re so rare you can never find them. Do I send a picture of it to my mom and tell her, or is she going to copy me on this?” she wondered aloud.
Ultimately, she decided to loop Kris in, texting her runway photos and campaign images with a plea: “If you ever find it, I want it.”
But then, Kardashian made a fatal error. While deep in studying mode (likely for California’s bar exam, which she sat for in July), she put her phone away for two weeks — ignoring even a text from the store saying they had located the bag. She negotiated the price down but forgot to confirm the purchase before going radio silent again.
“I don’t care who it is, I’m not responding,” she recalled telling herself.
When she finally saw her mom and sister, Khloé Kardashian, in person, Kris casually asked who wanted to chip in on a bag for “one of your sister’s birthdays.” The “Kardashians” star assumed it was the Hermès in question — and that mommy dearest had purchased it as an early birthday surprise for her (Kim’s birthday is Oct. 21).
Turns out, she was wrong. Days later, Kylie Jenner, who turned 28 on Aug. 10, posted a photo of the exact bag, thanking Kris for the birthday gift. Based on the Khy founder’s social media posts, the bag seems to be the exotic Hermès Birkin 42cm JPG crocodile skin shoulder bag in glossy bordeaux leather, which recently sold on 1stDibs for $73,000.
Kardashian immediately called her mom, unleashing her fury.
“Are you f–king kidding me?” she raged. “I turn into a monster.”
Kris claimed she had “no idea” what her daughter was talking about, insisting Kylie had sent her a birthday wish list. But Kardashian wasn’t buying it — especially since she’d seen the same list and the bag wasn’t on there.
“I had a full conversation with you,” she told her mom before pulling out the receipts: screenshots of her store negotiations and the text exchange with Kris. “I was raging,” she told Cooper.
But the story has a happy ending, thanks to Khloé, 41. The Good American founder revealed that she had actually purchased the same bag for Kim’s birthday and decided to gift it months early after learning about the drama.
“Khloé is such a real one, dude,” Cooper noted.
“It is so ridiculous over a bag, but it was my most recent crash out,” Kardashian admitted.
Kris has gifted her daughters Birkin bags on multiple occasions over the years, including for Christmas and birthdays. And Kim has received coveted Hermès styles from everyone, including close friends and ex-husband, Kanye West, over the years — she’s even shown off her massive handbag closet on social media, with some estimates placing her collection’s value in the millions.
No matter what, we can always count on at least one of the Kardashians to secure the bag.
