The BRCA gene, also called the BReast CAncer gene, can increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Those with the mutation tend to develop cancer at younger ages than people who do not have such a variant, according to cancer.gov.

“I did choose to have that [surgery] because I lost my mother and my grandmother very young,” she explained.

“I have the BRCA gene, so I chose to have a double mastectomy a decade ago. And then I’ve also had my ovaries removed, because that’s what took my mother.”

Her mom, Marcheline Bertrand, died at the age of 56 in 2007 after battling breast and ovarian cancer.

Looking back, the “Tomb Raider” star, 50, is content with her decision — and she doesn’t look down upon those who choose to go a different route.

“Those are my choices. I don’t say everybody should do it that way, but it’s important to have the choice. And I don’t regret it,” she said.

In her new film, “Couture,” Jolie portrays a woman named Maxine, who seduces her work colleague (Louis Garrel) — all while struggling with her breast cancer diagnosis and having to deal with chemotherapy, hair loss and other challenges.

“I think there’s much to say about this, and it is uniting for not just women but for anybody who’s gone through something, or someone who feels vulnerable and alone,” Jolie said of her film’s message.

“There’s something very particular to women’s cancers, because it obviously affects us, and how we feel as women.”

Jolie teased that she had no idea the plot would go in the direction that it would when she first looked into doing the film.

“When I read in the script, I had an idea of where the film was going to go – and I certainly didn’t think it would end the way this film ends, and I didn’t think that the man in the film would respond in the way he did, or that the desire would still be a part of the film,” she said.

“And I think that it’s really important to understand that and to continue to live and be desirous and feel as a woman, and for those who love those women, to remind them that maybe that’s something that you can do.”

While the movie also centers around the world of haute couture, Jolie says there’s a much deeper meaning behind it.

“I think it’s not really a film about fashion; it’s a film about the fragility of life,” she shared. “Fashion, to me, is a metaphor for the world of appearances; a world where you have to hide your wounds.”

As for how she honored her mother’s memory during filming, Jolie said she wore her mother’s necklace, as well as her ashes, in the movie.

“I thought about her a lot… I was like following my mother and I would think about all of these moments for her, and I wish that she had this community,” Jolie said. “I wish she was able to speak more, as openly as I’ve been… and not feel as alone.”

She added, “I think she would have told Maxine to live every day and focus on life. You can’t take any moment for granted.”

She made the decision after doctors told Jolie that the faulty gene gave her an 87 percent chance of developing breast cancer and a 50 percent chance of developing ovarian cancer.

“It is not easy to make these decisions,” the mom of six wrote in a 2015 op-ed for the New York Times.
