How can James Gunn just leave us like that with the Peacemaker Season 2 finale?

**Spoilers ahead for Season 2 Episode 8 of Peacemaker, now streaming on HBO Max**

After eight full of highs and lows for Chris Smith (John Cena), the season finally wraps with Chris having been abandoned using an interdimensional portal that dropped him on Salvation, a planet where Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) intend to house metahuman prisoners in the DCU.

For obvious reasons, this goes over like a lead balloon with Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), Sasha Bordeaux (Sol Rodriguez), Adrian (Freddie Stroma), Economos (Steve Agee), and Adebayo (Danielle Brooks). While the episode pretends to end with the gang finally getting their happy ending — and establishing Checkmate, we might add — things quickly turn sour as Chris is kidnapped and taken to an alternate world, where Flag wants to live out his days. But is this the end of Chris Smith as we know him?

Is Peacemaker Season 3 Happening at HBO Max?

At this time, no, it does not seem as though Gunn is actively pursuing plans to write or direct a third season of Peacemaker, although he does seem committed to ensuring the fanbase that this is not the end of these fan-favorite characters. According to Gunn, he has major plans for the future of the DC Universe, built, in some ways, around these wild personalities.

Talking with DEADLINE, the DC boss shared that while he couldn’t go into much detail about how the show would be playing out or how the universe might look different moving forward, fans can expect to see Chris Smith and the 11th Street Kids again soon.

“Some of these characters will continue, but also, it’s not exactly Peacemaker 3. I’m not ruling it out,” Gunn said in a pre-finale interview. “You’ll see (Episode) 8 and maybe you’ll find out a little bit more.” Of course, we still only know what the episode provided us with, but perhaps Gunn is teasing details that will emerge as we near other DC projects, including Creature Commandos Season 2, Lanterns, and Man of Tomorrow.

Additionally, during a press conference with DECIDER in attendance, Gunn teased that his main focus is building out a complex DC Universe and getting the plane off the ground than he is about revisiting Chris Smith in this particular fashion.

“No, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now. So that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a [third season]I don’t want to — never say never. But right now, no, this is about the future of the DCU. He is an important character,” he said.

We’ll just have to see.

When Will We Next See Chris Smith or Any of His Friends?

Don’t even think about asking Gunn that question. During the aforementioned press conference linked to the Season 2 finale, the director and writer shared that while he would simply love to share the inside scoop, he can only keep his lips zipped for the time being.

“We’ll have to see. That’s the secret,” he shared.

What Is the Next DCU Project to Come Out?

Thanks to Gunn’s due diligence, we know that the next few DC projects we have to look forward to after Peacemaker are shows like Lanterns and Creature Commandos, as well as at least a few films like Superman: Man of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Matt Reeves’ Batman sequel.

Following the Season 2 finale of Peacemaker, the next project to debut will be Lanterns on HBO Max in early 2026. After that, Supergirl will be in theaters by July 2026, followed by Creature Commandos Season 2, and then Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

When Could a Potential Third Season of Peacemaker Debut?

Given that Gunn has made it abundantly clear that Peacemaker Season 3 is not his main priority at the moment as he mans the ship, we are not expecting a third season anytime soon. Honestly, at this rate, we wiould just be happy if they greenlit the next season, in general.

If we had to put guesses on when we might see this rowdy team again, we would guess that it wouldn’t be until 2027 or 2028 at the very earliest.
