Princess of Norway Märtha Louise addresses claims she’s in a ‘lavender marriage’

Princess Märtha Louise of Norway is rebelling against the critics.

The 54-year-old shut down speculation that she and husband Durek Verrett are in a lavender marriage, which means two queer individuals get into a heterosexual marriage in order to conceal their true identities.

In an Instagram video posted Monday, the couple looked confusion as a question box popped up that read: “What’s a Lavender Marriage?”

Louise covers the camera before footage of herself and Verrett, 50, sporting lavender-colored outfits appears on camera.

Screenshots of the naysayer’s comments pop up next.

“The real housewife of Norway and her lavender marriage,” one commenter said, while a second added, “Girl, I don’t know if you know but you are in a lavender marriage.”

Louise and Verrett shake their heads before they transition once more to a colorful outfit.

Verrett then dips his wife in a sweet dance move before they gaze into one another’s eyes.

“Ordinary isn’t our thing,” the last message that flashed across the screen read. “We just love.”

The pair captioned their joint post, “Thought it was lavender? Plot twist. It’s just love and legacy.”

The princess and Verrett tied the knot in 2024, and their union was featured in the September Netflix documentary “Rebel Royals: An Unlikely Love Story.”

Verrett identifies as bisexual and was previously married to a woman named Zaneta Marzalkova from 2005 to 2009.

In 2007, he was engaged to a man named Hank Greenberg before splitting in 2015.

Greenberg told Daily Mail in 2019: “I loved Durek dearly and wish him all the best, but I don’t have anything nice to say about him.”

“He has immense talent and I believe in his mission that love is the answer, but I don’t believe in the man any more.”

Louise was married to Ari Behn from 2002 to 2017. The author died by suicide in 2019.

In the documentary, Verrett explained that the princess initially introduced him as gay to her and Behn’s daughters: Maud, 22, Leah, 20, and Emma, 17.

“I’m glad that she actually told them that I was her gay best friend in the beginning, because they’re very strong personalities, and let me tell you, those girls would’ve put me through the ringer,” he said. “The fact that I became the cool gay best friend, and I kind of eased in that way, and then when they got to realize that we were actually in love with each other, it kind of eased it a little bit.”

Louise added, “Then they liked him already.”

Verrett and Louise first got together in 2018, and have continued to spark debate in recent years.

Following the Netflix doc, the duo was accused of “breaching” the agreement they made with the Norwegian royal family after Louise stepped down from her senior duties in 2022.

Verrett ended up retracting his previous comments that implied allegations of racism.

He shared in a lengthy online statement: “What I said in the Netflix documentary about my father-in-law [the King] not knowing racism has been twisted by the media. Let me be clear about what I meant.”

“In American culture when we say someone does not know racism it often means they have not experienced it in the same way we have or they do not understand the depth of its impact. It does not mean they are ignorant or unkind. It means their lived experience is different. Cultural language does not always translate the same way,” Verrett expressed. “I love my father-in-law and my mother-in-law deeply. We have a strong and respectful relationship. They have supported me and my wife through everything and we share great love and understanding.”

Despite online criticism, Louise hasn’t shied away from gushing over her partner.

“Being married is amazing, especially when you’re married to the love of your life,” she shared with Today.com in a joint interview last month. “It’s amazing to be married to a man who loves me like you do.”
