Virginia Fraternal Order of Police demands Jay Jones drop out of AG race

WASHINGTON — The Virginia Fraternal Order of Police is demanding that embattled Democratic Attorney General hopeful Jay Jones exit the race “immediately” in light of the recently surfaced text messages showing him fantasizing about the former state speaker getting shot in the head.

Jones’ disturbing text messages in 2022 had surfaced late last week in a bombshell story, but the AG hopeful has remained in the race and local Democrats have stood by him.

“This conduct has no place in our society or democracy, especially from an elected official who is running to be the top prosecutor in Virginia,” the Old Dominion state’s FOT wrote in a letter to Jones Monday.

“You, Jay Jones, are unfit for the office of Attorney General of Virginia. It is time you hold yourself accountable for these actions and withdraw from the Attorney General race immediately.”

The police union continued, “The men and women of law enforcement work tirelessly to combat the violence you wished on a fellow Virginian and his family.”

Jones launched into the vile screed in a series of texts that began at 8 a.m. on Aug. 8, 2022, to Republican House Delegate Carrie Coyner. Jones had served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2018 through January 2022.

During the exchange, he fumed against then-Republican state House Speaker Todd Gilbert and, at one point, cruelly fantasized that the former state House Speaker’s wife could watch her children die, to change Gilbert’s views, the National Review reported.

Initially, Jones refused to apologize for his disturbing text messages and blasted his rival, conservative incumbent AG Jason Miyares, for “dropping smears” against him.

Then he claimed to have contacted Gilbert and his wife to apologize for his “grave mistake.”

The Post has obtained copies of Jones’ sick messages.

“Three people, two bullets,” one of the vile texts sent at 8 a.m. on Aug. 8, 2022, subsequently obtained by The Post, read. “Gilbert, hitler, and pol pot.”

“Gilbert gets two bullets to the head,” Jones continued, “Spoiler: put Gilbert in the crew with the two worst people you know and he receives both bullets every time.”

In the 2022 texts, Jones also groused about the “glowing tributes” from Republicans that centrist Democrat Joe Johnson Jr. — a former state legislator who died days earlier — was receiving.

Abigail Spanberger denounced Jay Jones’ texts but declined to demand he drop out of the race for AG. AP

“If those guys die before me,” Jones declared, “I will go to their funerals to piss on their graves.

“Send them out awash in something.”

Prior to the revelations, Jones had generally been outperforming Miyares in most polling, though the race was very close.

President Trump and a cacophony of top Republicans have called on Jones to drop out of the race.

But Democrats have largely refrained from bailing on Jones just yet, with top pols such as Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) declining to pull their support from him.

Gubernatorial hopeful Abigail Spanberger had denounced Jones’ texts but refrained from calling on him to drop out.

“After learning of these comments earlier today, I spoke frankly with Jay about my disgust with what he had said and texted,” Spanberger said in a statement last week.

“I made clear to Jay that he must fully take responsibility for his words. What I have also made clear is that as a candidate — and the next Governor of our Commonwealth, I will always condemn violent language in our politics.”
