Mac Jones saw a dead body before leading 49ers to shocking win

The day Mac Jones made his third start for the 49ers began with anything but a calm and relaxing morning.

While standing on the balcony of his Marina del Ray hotel room Thursday, Jones saw a dead body floating in the water, according to The Athletic.

Someone reportedly called the police and Jones reportedly told his 49ers teammates about what he observed.

As players loaded buses for traveling to SoFi Stadium to face the Rams, they saw investigators and a coroner’s van, the outlet added.

The incident was still under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as of Friday afternoon, according to The Athletic.

Once the game started, Jones went 33-for-49 for 342 yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers’ overtime win, continuing to excel while filling in for an injured Brock Purdy and becoming the latest Kyle Shanahan success story at quarterback.

He helped San Francisco construct an early 14-0 lead and led an eight-play, 37-yard drive that ended with a field goal to start overtime.

Jones has completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 905 yards, six touchdowns and just one interception — a promising stretch for the former first-round pick whose tenure with the Patriots fizzled out and forced him to take a job as Trevor Lawrence’s backup last year with the Jaguars.

He played through a left knee injury Thursday night, while also dealing with cramping in his legs and arms.

Jones also vomited and needed to eat three bananas on the sideline, according to The Athletic.

“Definitely a lot of things happened, but I feel good,” Jones told reporters after the game. “Just working through some stuff. I was able to play, so that’s all that matters. If I can protect myself, then it’s my job to be out there.”

Jones pushed back on the notion that this could turn into a quarterback competition, telling reporters that the 49ers signed him to be Purdy’s backup and “that’s my job.”

“Brock’s the starter of this team, and right now he’s dealing with something,” Jones told reporters, “And for him to go out there last week and play when you know he probably wasn’t at full health, he cares about this team. So, I’m just trying to get some wins for him so it helps us down the line, and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.

“I’ve been in his position, I’ve been a starter, and you want your backup to go in there and win, because at the end of the season, that could be the hit or miss between a playoff or not.”

The 49ers have started 4-1 and will get Purdy — who aggravated his injury in his last outing and is now week-to-week with turf toe — back at some point.

It’s unclear if the $265 million quarterback will be ready for San Francisco’s Oct. 12 game against the Buccaneers.
