The pop star, 35, outright sings about her fiancé Travis Kelce in several of her tracks. She also appears to subtly reference people like Charli XCX and Blake Lively in other songs.
Swift is no stranger to dropping Easter eggs in her music. Her last album, 2024’s “The Tortured Poets Department,” included references to her ex-boyfriends Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy, rival Kim Kardashian, mythological figure Cassandra, Hollywood actress Clara Bow, and more.
Swift made “The Life of a Showgirl” before announcing her engagement to Kelce, 35, in August. The Grammy Award winner went on Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce’s podcast, “New Heights,” on Aug. 13 to officially announce her 12th album.
She collaborated with producers Max Martin and Shellback to make the record.
“It was really special,” she said on the podcast. “It meant the world to me to have this creative experience where we knew we had to bring the best ideas we’ve ever had. I also know the pressure I’m putting on this record by saying that, but I don’t care because I love it that much.”
Here are all the easter eggs in every song from “The Life of a Showgirl.”
Track 1: ‘The Fate of Ophelia’
In her opening song on the album, Swift references Ophelia from William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Ophelia falls into a state of madness and tragically drowns to death by the play’s end.
Swift sings about how Kelce saved her in the song.
“You dug me out of my grave and saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia / Keep it one hundred,” she sings.
Track 2: ‘Elizabeth Taylor’
Swift gives an outright nod to Elizabeth Taylor in the album’s second track.
The lyrics mentions how Swift can relate to the late actress’s experience with fame and love.
“Oftentimes it doesn’t feel so glamorous to be me,” Swift sings.
Track 3: ‘Opalite’
“Opalite” has obvious references to Kelce. Opal is the October birthstone, the month the football player was born.
“It’s alright, you were dancing through the lightning strikes/ Sleepless on an onyx night/ But now the sky is opalite,” she sings.
Track 4: ‘Father Figure’
“Father Figure” features an interpolation of George Michaels’ 1987 track of the same name.
The late singer’s estate confirmed in a statement that they supported Swift’s move.
“When we heard the track we had no hesitation in agreeing to this association between two great artists and we know George would have felt the same. George Michael Entertainment wishes Taylor every success with ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ and ‘Father Figure,’” the statement read.
Track 5: ‘Eldest Daughter’
“Eldest Daughter” speaks to Swift’s experience as the only daughter and oldest child of Scott Swift and Andrea Swift.
The song is also about her love for Kelce, with lyrics like “I’m never gonna let you down / I’m never gonna leave you now.”
Track 6: ‘Ruin the Friendship’
Fans assumed “Ruin the Friendship” was going to be about Swift’s alleged fallout with Lively. Instead, Swift sings about a friend she wished had turned into a love interest.
The pop star even references her childhood best friend, Abigail Anderson Berard, in the track.
“Abigail called with the bad news. Goodbye and we’ll never know why. It was not an invitation but I flew home anyway, with so much left to say,” Swift belts out. “It was not convenient, but I whispered at the grave. Should have kissed you anyway.”
Track 7: ‘Actually Romantic’
According to online speculation, “Actually Romantic” is a diss track aimed at Charli XCX. The “Apple” singer opened for Taylor on her “Reputation Tour” and is friends with Taylor’s ex Matty Healy and his fiancée, Gabbriette Bechtel.
Fans are claiming that Swift’s line “I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave” is about Charli, who has been open about her alleged drug use in her music.
Swift also sings: “High-fived my ex and then you said you’re glad he ghosted me. Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face / Some people might be offended / But it’s actually sweet.”
Track 8: ‘Wish List’
“Wish List” seems to be all about Swift’s future with her soon-to-be-husband.
“I just want you / Have a couple kids / Got the whole block looking like you / We tell the world to leave us thе f–k alone, and they do,” she sings.
Track 9: ‘Wood’
Swift doesn’t hold back with the intimate lyrics in “Wood.”
“His love was the key / That opened my thighs,” she sings, while also belting out, “Girls, I don’t need to catch a bouquet / to know a hard rock is on the way.”
The song also has an obligatory reference to Kelce’s podcast, “New Heights.”
Track 10: ‘Cancelled!’
Swift seems to be defending Lively following their alleged fallout over the ongoing Justin Baldoni legal battle in “Cancelled!” — at least that’s what the Swifties think.
“Good thing I like my friends cancelled / I liked them cooked in Gucci and in scandal,” Swift sings.
Lively was named the face of Gucci’s new fragrance, Gucci Premiere, in 2012. She also appeared in a short ad film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn for the fragrance that year.
“I salute you if you’re much too much to handle,” the lyrics continue. “Now you know exactly who you’re friends are / We’re the ones with matching scars.”
Track 11: ‘Honey’
“Honey” is another example of Swift gushing over Kelce.
“Redefine all of those blues / When you say ‘honey,’” she sings. “Summertime spritz, pink skies / You can call me ‘honey’ if you want / Because I’m the one you want.”
Track 12: ‘The Life of a Showgirl’
The final track on Swift’s album features her collab with close pal Sabrina Carpenter.
The pop stars sing about being women who want to have “the life of a showgirl,” but are told that’s not something they can achieve. By the end of the song, they become showgirls.
The track officially ends with audio from Swift’s final night on her Eras Tour, where she says goodbyes to the audience and gives a shoutout to Carpenter.
