Rams’ Sean McVay ‘sick’ over final play call that lost game

In Thursday night’s NFC West clash, the two teams went back and forth in a thriller that went to overtime.
After the 49ers grabbed a three-point lead on a field goal, the Rams were set up in prime position to either tie the game or win it off a 38-yard pass from Matthew Stafford that set them up at the opposing 20-yard line.
On the next three plays, though, the Rams gained nine yards to set up a fourth-and-1. After the 49ers and Rams both called timeouts, Los Angeles decided to go for it and forget about a tie.
The call backfired.

Stafford handed the ball off to running back Kyren Williams — who had fumbled a potential game-winning touchdown at the goal line late in the fourth quarter — on a dive to the right. But Williams was immediately stuffed by the San Francisco front, getting no gain and ending the game.
McVay said afterward that he felt “sick” over the decision. He said he had no thoughts of kicking a field goal, but in hindsight, maybe wished he had.
“It was a poor decision by me right there,” McVay said. “… I’m pretty sick right now, I’m sick of the spot I put our group in to end the game. But, hey, these are the tough beats you have to learn from and move forward and that’s what we’re going to do.

“The play selection was very poor. I’m sick right now because I put our players in a s–tty spot. And I got to live with that.”
Stafford, in the loss, passed for 389 yards and three touchdowns as the Rams dropped to 3-2.
Mac Jones, filling in for Brock Purdy for the third time this year, excelled with 342 yards passing and two touchdowns.
A banged-up San Francisco squad has now moved to 4-1.
