MTA slams commuters with fare hike months after imposing congestion pricing: ‘you guys are pathetic’

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted to hike subway fares to a whopping $3 Tuesday as part of across-the-board increases set to crunch commuters just months after it imposed a controversial congestion toll in downtown Manhattan.

No one on the authority’s board voted against bumping up the fares from $2.90 beginning in January 2026, when the cash-strapped agency will also hit commuters with increases on the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and on MTA-owned bridges and tunnels.

The increase comes as the MTA has collected $449.4 million from congestion pricing through August but loses as much as $1 billion per year to fare and toll evasion.

Transit chief Janno Lieber insisted it was wrong to conflate the latest fare increase with its income from the congestion toll.

“I think you know the difference between our capital program, which congestion pricing goes to and our operating budget,” Lieber snapped.

Straphangers told the MTA board how incensed they were by the looking spike in price.

“You guys are pathetic, every single last one of you,” one commuter said Tuesday.

“I hope you guys make the right decision. If not, I’m still going to be here. I’m young — all of you guys are old.”

This is a developing story.
