Despite an approximately $340 million payroll and owning the best record in the sport (45-24) in mid-June, the Mets played like one of MLB’s worst teams over the final three-plus months.

The Mets now face an enormous offseason as they have to fix their pitching staff and make another decision on Pete Alonso, who said Sunday he will opt out of his contract to re-enter free agency this winter.

The Mets entered Game 162 against the Marlins on Sunday needing a win and a Reds loss to get into the postseason.

While the Reds lost to the Brewers, the listless Mets fell 4-0 in Miami.
