“Now I’m at about level ground,” he quipped.
In April, Barack, 64, elaborated on how he had to fix the issues in his marriage to Michelle, 61, after the politician’s back-to-back terms in office from 2009 to 2017 took a toll on his relationship.
“I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” he told Hamilton College President Steven Tepper in a conversation at the time.
“So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things,” Barack added.
And in May 2023, the “Our Oceans” narrator said being out of the White House allowed him to “have a little more time with her.”
Rumors that there was trouble in paradise for the Obamas swirled when Michelle began staying out of the public eye ahead of President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January.
The former first lady skipped the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter on Jan. 9 and also declined to watch Trump be sworn into office on Jan. 20.
Barack attended both events solo.
At the time, Page Six exclusively reported that the “IMO” podcast co-host was on an “extended holiday vacation” in Hawaii.
Sources also told us that Michelle had been “checked out” of Washington, DC, life since their family left the White House in 2017.
However, Barack shut down the divorce speculation by posting a sweet birthday shout-out to the “love of [his] life” in January and by sharing a loved-up Valentine’s Day selfie of them in February.
Michelle also denied that she and Barack were headed for divorce.
“That’s the thing that we as women struggle with — disappointing people,” she said on Sophia Bush’s “Work in Progress” podcast in April.
“So much so that people, they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself, that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing,” she added.
Michelle and Barack met in 1989 at a law firm in Chicago and married three years later.
The couple shares daughters Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24.
