Upon arriving, officers learned that New York City Department of Sanitation workers had made the grisly discovery of the human skeletal remains in a garbage bag, cops said.

Two supervised sanitation workers had loaded the covered remains into the hopper of a vehicle before noticing a foul odor, sources said.

The workers were concerned that the bag, which appeared to be wrapped in tape and rope according to a photo obtained by The Post, could contain a body, and contacted authorities, according to sources.

EMS workers later confirmed the remains appeared to belong to a woman, sources added.

Idlewild Park, a preserve bordering the north of JFK Airport, is home to one of the largest remaining saltwater marshes in Queens.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the identity of the body, police said.

The investigation into the findings remains ongoing.
