When Barkley, the recent Eagles Super Bowl champion, was asked about Jones after his newfound success with the Colts this year, Barkley grew so excited for his former quarterback of five years.
“Daniel Jones! Let’s go! That’s my dawg!” Barkley told CBS Sports this week. “I gotta FaceTime him (more). He texts me and says I never answer my phone calls.”
Jones, who is now starting under center in Indianapolis after beating out Anthony Richardson, has gotten the team off to a 2-0 start after wins over the Dolphins and Broncos.
In Week 2, he completed 23 of 34 passes for 316 yards with a touchdown to lead a 29-28 win at Lucas Oil Stadium.
“The fact that he’s off to a hot start… Seeing what he went through throughout camp, battling with [Richardson] over there, I was super excited for him to win that starting job,” Barkley told CBS Sports. “To go out there and play at a high level now and get to show people the player that I know, the person that I know.”
The most successful season Barkley and Jones shared came in 2022 when the Giants made the playoffs and upset the Vikings in the wild-card round.
It was a career season for both of them at the time. Jones completed 317 passes for 3,205 yards and he had the lowest interception rate in the league (1.1 percent), which helped him earn a four-year, $160 million contract extension with the Giants.
Barkley rushed for 1,312 yards that year, a number he surpassed with the Eagles in 2024. Along with getting his first Super Bowl ring last season, Barkley broke the NFL single-season rushing record, including the playoffs, by racking up 2,504 yards.
Although it’s early, Jones could be headed toward more success of his own in Indy.
“Outside of the Philadelphia Eagles and myself, I don’t want anyone else to perform at a high level besides Daniel Jones,” Barkley added. “I’m a big believer in anything. It might not happen in football, but the way he carries himself and the way that he works and the way that he competes — it’s gonna show at some point. Happy that’s starting to show right now.”
Jones’ next challenge will be the Titans (0-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
