Sabres’ Rasmus Dahlin shares story of fiancee’s near-death experience
Rasmus Dahlin’s offseason travels came with a harrowing tale.
The Sabres defenseman revealed his fiancee, Carolina Matovac, fell ill in what was a sign of major heart failure during their vacation in France.

“Fortunately, she received CPR on multiple occasions, and up to a couple of hours at a time to keep her alive, which ultimately saved her life,” the Swedish star wrote in a letter posted to the Sabres’ website. “Without her receiving lifesaving CPR, the result would have been unimaginable. It is hard to even think about the worst-case scenario.”

Matovac was transferred to a hospital in France and put on life support before getting a heart transplant. She remains there, and is expected to make a full recoveriy from the ordeal.
“While Carolina is still working through her rehab to return to be with me in Buffalo, she has demonstrated an incredible determination, spirit, positivity, and resilience that I am in awe of,” he wrote. “This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives, however it is something that we have learned so much from.
“We will continue to grow from these experiences and are so grateful for all the love and support we have received. We are truly blessed in so many ways and fully realize how fortunate we are.”
The No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft went on to thank the multiple hospitals and their staffs for their efforts, Sabres ownership and brass, among others, and pointed to the importance of “CPR treatment, CPR training, organ donation, and heart-related issues that impact so many people and families around the world.”
The trauma has given Dahlin, 25, new perspective on the precipice of his eighth NHL training camp.
“We hope that we can all reflect on how fortunate we are to have the people and experiences that we share together every single day,” he wrote.
Named the Sabres’ captain last season, Dahlin has collected 83 goals and 260 points in 509 NHL games over seven seasons.
