FCC Head Warns It Could Be “Worthwhile” To “Look Into” Whether ‘The View’ Is Violating FCC Rules
After Jimmy Kimmel‘s shocking ABC suspension, could The View be next?
Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, warned during an appearance on Scott Jennings’ podcast that it may be “worthwhile” to look into whether other television shows such as The View are violating FCC regulations after Jimmy Kimmel Live was suspended indefinitely on ABC.

“The FCC does have a rule, called the equal opportunity rule, which means … in the run-up to an election if you have one partisan election official on, you have to give equal time, equal opportunity to the opposing partisan politician,” Carr said, per Deadline. “But there’s an exception to that rule called the ‘bona fide news exception,’ which means if you are a bonafide news program, you don’t have to abide by the equal opportunity rule.”
Carr noted that most late night shows – except for Saturday Night Live – can be considered bonafide news programs. However, he’s “not so sure” that extends to The View.
“I would assume you could make the argument that The View is a bona fide news program,” he said. “But I am not so sure about that, and I think it is worthwhile to have the FCC look into whether The View and some of these other programs that you have still qualify as bonafide news programs.”
The View, which discusses everything from politics to pop culture, currently stars Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin, Ana Navarro and Sunny Hostin. Like Jimmy Kimmel Live, the daytime talk show is also owned by ABC.
Griffin, who has been known to offer a more conservative perspective compared to her co-hosts, also previously served as White House communications director during President Donald Trump’s first administration.
The ladies of The View regularly criticize President Trump’s administration. They also featured former President Biden in his first televised interview since leaving the White House, and former Vice President Kamala Harris is set to appear on the talk show Sept. 23.
Per Deadline, The View has invited Trump onto the show after he entered office. He appeared on the show prior to his presidency.
The View executive producer Brian Teta said in 2024, “We’ve invited Trump to join us at the table for both 2016 and 2020 elections, and he declined, and at a certain point, we stopped asking. So I don’t anticipate that changing.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
